I'm genuinely quite shocked - VoR's got it spot on, she was such a fixture of 80's/early 90's television that it feels rather more seismic than it actually is, such was the narrow nature of mainstream broadcasting around that time.

The charts will remain untroubled. Twitter will be a lot more interesting...

Cheryl Baker live on BBC News, literally flabbergasted and shocked, filling up LIVE ON AIR.

Was she really that much of a cunt that we are celebrating her DEATH?

Either way, not really a fan but thought she would go on forever too

Blind Date and Surprise Surprise really WAS Saturday Night TV of my childhood, along with Gladiators. :(

Yes, same for me. Well, Blind Date, Gladiators and of course Stars In Their Eyes... cringe!

BA cabin crew, the people of Denham, and anyone who has ever worked with her will be absolutely devastated by this news. She was always so warm-hearted, modest, and never forgot her roots - always polite and lovely to work with. RIP Cilla.

I always forget about her status as a 'neighbour from hell' in Denham since it seems overshadowed by the tales of her in 1A.

Couldn't stand the old bitch!

Worst thing... Liverpool will go into MOURNING.

I can't see it... Her credentials as a scouser were always questionable. She was too much of a Tory/Thatcher supporter too, which left left everyone a bit cold to say the least.

Although, to be fair... I'm a bit saddened I'll never be able to hear her say FURR HURR again in that ridiculous accent.

Am I right in saying that after becoming famous she actually affected a dreadful posher accent for day to day use, only deigning to SCOUSE UP for television appearances?

I am absolutely AGOG at the pouring of AFFECTION for this old harridan on my Facebook. Someone even suggested a STATE FUNERAL! :D I told my mum she was apparently a complete COW at which she was aghast!

Yeah, essentially a 'professional scouser' along with her good friend Jimmy Tarbuck. She hadn't lived in Liverpool for over 50 years. Not that I BLAME HER for moving on and going elsewhere but I think her 'queen of Liverpool' status was dropped when she went to great lengths to support Thatcher.

Also - when she performed in a Liverpool-oriented panto a few years back, she demanded that rehearsals take place in London as she didn't wan to be in Liverpool for any longer than necessary.

The evidence of her being a truly awful woman is certainly overwhelming.

There's not THAT much of it on my facebook feed.

I think this is possibly due to me being a bit TOO old for her to be my 'childhood' TV staple. Plus of course being a bit older, a lot of my faves dying isn't THAT shocking. If you're a bit younger it's probably more so.

My Facebook is RAMMED with Cilla tributes. I'm so tempted to drop a GLAD SHE'S DEAD status or something more FB friendly, but I like that I have exactly 500 friends right now.

A friend of my father's posted a status, which my mother pointed out to me in outrage. It was along the lines of

'Cilla Black may of been a national treasure, and may of been behind some great saturday night TV. But what else was there? An unpleasant woman by all accounts, and even worse - a phoney.'

As far as I'm aware he's currently getting abusive messages and comments along the lines of 'dnt disrespect the ded!!', but it's BRILLIANT when someone isn't afraid to point out that her status as a CUNT remains.

Katie Hopkins as brilliant as ever and spot on too.

Everyone's now taken to posting their favourite Cilla songs. I've made a few cryptic posts but I'm the same, I don't want to cause a huge offence. I never realised how much she was loved. Even if it wasn't for the tales of her being a complete cunt, I CANNOT stand her voice!

[grammar nazi]He deserves abusive messages for using OF instead of HAVE[/grammar nazi]

Cryptic Facebook posts (especially when lifted wholesale from elsewhere) are the WORST.

I hate her voice as well. Always have.

I was quite sure that Mr L was going to dig out his GH compilation CD earlier, but I think it's slipped his mind for now.

I don't GET it. The Saturday night TV shows weren't even THAT good. I can't see how it's justified.

I believe in the right to take a strong dislike to someone based on their hairstyle, it's a philosophy I've always lived by. She's the pinnacle of it.

I'm choosing to ignore that PASSIVE AGGRESSIVENESS from a certain person.

Just came across this SHADE from Dionne! :disco:

Darling I know, but it's ALL WE HAD. No Netflix or internet chit chat for us. It was either that, nip down the Lamb and Hen for a stout or OPEN A VEIN

Didn't Blind Date and Surprise Surprise get up near twenty million viewers at their peaks? Obviously viewing figures were higher then, but they were huge shows by any measurement.

My first boyfriend used to TIE ME DOWN and make me watch BLIND DATE and BIRDS OF A FEATHER against my will and they were both FAIRLY SHIT

As a member of the SWP perhaps he was trying to engage me with the struggles of the PROLETARIAT

Or perhaps NOT
