New Joel Coen movie starring Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand

it could be good, but Macbeth? AGAIN? can't someone adapt one of the other ones?

and isn't Frances a bit po faced for Lady Macbeth?

I don’t think it’s ever specified that Macbeth is supposed to be a young man in the play…

Her husband is the director, she'd appear in anything if he directed it.

Liking the cast a lot, especially Corey Hawkins who is ridiculously talented.

I loved this. I didn't know the story apart from the base plot so I popeth mine own ch'rry so to speak

the witch scenes :disco:

I think I'll have to source Kurosawa's take on it, Throne of Blood. you can really tell from a black and white movie like this how much it owes to the Japanese masters of cinema

Throne of Blood is available through Criterion.

I liked this as much as I can like any Shakespeare adaptation (not much because I struggle with the language). It’s visually stunning.

Yeah i thought this was very good, but I can't say it excited me terribly as it was pretty much just a straight retelling of Macbeth.

But great set design, beautiful set design.

Is it better than the Polanski version we had to watch in school?
Not for me, but they're really different. The Polanski is of course bloody as hell (what a film to make after your wife has just been murdered) and that castle is one frosty location that drives everyone mad.

This one isn't as exciting as it's all very muted (McDormand is barely there for most of her speeches) but Denzil is great and the design/cinematography is to die for. And the way they do Birnam Wood is great.

MUCH better than the Fassbender/Cotilliard version though - that really was all over the place.
