Btw wasn’t trying to show off about our low case numbers, I mean the biggest active volcano also exploded so we’ve still got shit going on

Sorry for the stupid question, but where are these 40,000+ cases per day coming from?

Surely non-vaccinated people for the most part aren't going to be inclined to test regularly, and 'only' 1,000 of them are being hospitalised.

Is the rest a lot of vaccinated people catching it + school children?

I think it is children really because they're unvaccinated. Like in our house, one child bought it home and all 4 of us got it. When you've got covid in the house and you're breathing the same air, I think it's almost impossible not to catch it even if you're vaccinated.

The whole wear your mask on the tube and anywhere else enclosed if you can is an absolute CROCK. At least up here in the deepest darkest North it is mandatory.

Here they are considering to make the use of two masks one on top of another, mandatory. Largely because there has been an increase on deaths of fully vaccinated young people in the past few days.

The amount of staff off work at the moment is ridiculous. Something like 15% down at the moment.

No closing though. I really hope this increase isn't any more than public masks, social distancing and more jabs. I couldn't face experiencing my course online.

Sajid Javid said the government would not be bringing in its Plan B measures, which include mandatory face coverings and working from home, "at this point".
He added that he did not believe the current pressures on the NHS were unsustainable.

I mean has this guy worked a day in a hospital?? I'd love to see him work as our NHS staff do and then say 'current pressures are sustainable'. I'm fairly sure most of these staff would tell you that even before covid the conditions were pushed. Honestly comments like this make me mad.

And the less said about that recent Mothra attack the better. In my prayers.

Presumably he thinks all the cancelled cancer ops (and the myriad of others) which have been happening for well over a year with no sign of improvement now ARE sustainable.

My FB tells me the female contingent of the group protested in the children's ward.

Get better soon, @Pingu

We're back to FFP2 masks everywhere here. Numbers are the highest they've ever been in this neck of the woods. 500 new case per 100k inhabitants each week.

1 in 50 here last week according to ONS.

Dropped this week, not sure if that's just because kids have been off school and not doing lateral flows though

Yeah, 5 - 14-year-olds are the massive drivers here right now. 1 out of 65 in that age group contracted it in the past 7 days.

I know it's easy to say, but just make sure you've had your vaccines and wear a mask out. You've little chance of catching it then, and even if you do more than likely it will be only mild.

I popped to the shops today after work and literally no one had a mask on.

Watching a news story on Romania now and it's heartbreaking, they're putting people on hospital parking lots cause they're already full inside. On a brighter note the UK has just approved a covid pill, hopefully this can change everything.

Did anybody else have this when they got Covid? My loss of taste and smell was mercifully short-lived, coming back on the whole after about 48 hours.

Now however certain tastes have suddenly become absolutely revolting - toothpaste is the main one. I can’t compare it to the taste of anything else but brushing my teeth makes me gag as the taste has suddenly become intensely unpleasant!

I’ve heard of that happening. My flatmate suddenly started disliking anything sugary, which was a bit of a blessing. It only lasted for a few months though and gradually restored to normal.

Why was it a blessing? Is she diabetic?

That sounds really dangerous to me. It's hard enough to breathe properly through one, let alone two!!!!!!!!!

It hasn't been applied so far, the discussion was to use them while in public transportation (commuting to work and back) to reduce the rate of transmission, but they moved to the direction of putting more pressure to the unvaccinated people to do their shots so that they'll get lower severe covid infections admitted to the hospitals. I don't think pressure will work, if the main reason the unvaccinated people are not doing their shots is stubborness, and tbh I feel to a certain extent it is, more pressure will only make them more angry. They are already saying things like "my body, my right, my civil liberties" etc. 🤷‍♂️

I don’t think pressure works exactly, but not letting people participate in certain activities does. Some people are completely against it but I think restrictions can convince the skeptical
