Superfluous new cities

Listen to you all talking about Milton Keynes like it has too many roundabouts and none of you have actually been to St Helens.

HAHAHAHAHA

(don't go to St Helens)

I went through it once :(

If Swindon can have a complicated roundabout then...

Is Swindon a city? What’s with that fucking stupid roundabout of death

As my nearest big town, I learnt to drive in Swindon :zombie: I see they didn’t even apply to become a city this time, it must be one of the biggest towns left - awful place though! Nothing but grey as far as the eye can see.

Gloucestershire or Wiltshire side? :disco:

Right on the border!

Swindon has managed to go downhill even further in the past few years, the town centre is pretty much just empty derelict buildings now. You'd think someone would fund a Billie Piper statue or something at least.

I'm not sure I know where that is. All I know of Swindon really is the outlet village and the town centre.

It definitely has a big town vibe rather than a city one. If it looks got city status it would feel a little hollow.

They're the stairs up to the theatre (which is considered less of an attraction than the stairs apparently :D)

Sadly I see that Swindon Pride (last year headlined by Veronica Green) has been replaced by a Pride Picnic due to lack of funding this year :(

Definitely will be! Weirdly when I was growing up, Swindon actually inexplicably had 3 gay clubs and a gay bar - there's nothing of the sort (possibly in all of Wiltshire) now.

I remember going to a pub there about 11/12 years ago I guess - The Mail Coach? Quite close to the rail station. Is that closed, or no longer gay?

Now a sports bar! Pink Rooms which was the biggest gay club when I was a teenager is now a (straight) strip club :(

Sports Bar? Completely adding insult to injury.

Would you really have to go to Bristol/Bath (or perhaps Oxford or Reading?) for a gay club now?

More than Cheltenham and Gloucester COMBINED :o

Yeah I think so, unless I’m missing something else. The saving grace of this area is our transport links though, Bristol is only about 30 minutes down the M4, London about 50 minutes by train.

I've got quite happy memories of quite a grotty one in Cheltenham - we're talking about 25 years ago. I don't remember what it was called, or where it was - I think it may have been somewhere on that grim stretch of High St before it leads into the nicer shopping area, from trips back to Cheltenham since. That area is all fast food joints, nail bars and charity shops now. It was a pub upstairs and more of a small club downstairs. Only went there once, but it was quite a successful outing. And they didn't happen THAT much for those to stand out :D

HA oh that would have been EXS site of NO successful outings for me :D

I am not sure how I feel about all these places getting city status. Keep most of them towns, they are too small.

Happy for Colchester though, its got enough status to be a city.

Bangor (NI) is definitely not a city. Most people here are AGOG and pretty amused by this. Do not book a city break there. You just need an afternoon for an ice cream and a stroll along the seafront and marina.

:D :D

You need to join the city tourist board and film a fly on the wall doc :D

I second this (it’s my home town). Though I’d say Skelmersdale is far worse for roundabouts

I have never been to Milton Keynes. Always travelled through it/past it :D Always fancied a gig/event at The Bowl, but you don't hear much about it these days.

Skem probably has more but it’s the weird confusing route around the business park and shopping centre in St Helens that gets me. It’s like it was specifically designed to let you in but not let you out.
