Texas Elementary School Shooting

14 pupils 11 and under. Fuck me and fuck the stupid Americans and their guns.

Bloody hell. Those poor children (and the adults).

The only action I anticipate is them arming the teachers as if that will do ANYTHING (except make guns more accessible :) )

I remember seeing an article as a child with the pictures of the kids and that has always stayed with me. It just boggles the mind how they refuse to control guns.

The explicit and unequivocal logic of guns = death is completely lost on half of Americans. Millions upon millions of people just refuse to compromise because they see the constitution as a holy book. It will always remain the world's biggest mystery. The NRA are responsible for so much loss of life it's impossible to quantify.

I'm so fucking tired of this. And to think the country changed with Columbine and everyone remembers it as a watershed event of the 90s. Will we even talk about this in two weeks' time? Or are we completely desensitised to these now?

The reaction to Dunblane got it absolutely right - gun ownership was already far tighter here (and mercifully there was no god given right to carry enshrined in the constitution and almost no political polarisation either) which made shootings rare - the only really notable one before Dunblane was Hungerford and the only one since was Cumbria. The banning of nearly all casual gun ownership after Dunblane almost entirely eliminated this type of crime.

When you arm one person you just arm another. It’s why we should also be thankful the police do not routinely carry weapons.

There are no words for this. Just sadness and anger. How thoroughly dreadful.

It wasn’t even controversial here. Kids were murdered, gun control went through the roof, everybody agreed that was a good thing. Why there’s so much determination to hold on to the thing that’s caused so much loss in America is just beyond me.

There was at least one journalist who opposed the ban. He wrote:
“Nanny is confiscating their toys. It is like one of those vast Indian programmes of compulsory vasectomy.”

That journalist is now the Prime Minister.

Evidencing, as if it was needed, that he is nothing more than a troll with privilege.

I fucking hate republicans. How they, who can make anything into a political issue, can accuse Beto of turning this tragedy, which was partially caused by their political issue, into a political issue, is beyond me

Obviously I know he’s running against him in a few months, but this is still quite powerful.

I honestly don’t understand how it all works - I get that it’s not his fault Congress is lockjammed, but is there not some kind of executive order he could sign?

I don’t understand how it all works, but would it ever be possible to have a national referendum on that outdated and irrelevant 2nd Amendment, without being blocked by all the middle men?

The US don't have a process for national referendums, only at the state level (and I don't believe in all states).

Changing the constitution ultimately needs 3/4s of all states on board, which is never going to happen.
