Borgen

Just back from the Q+A session. The final two episodes were absolutely phenomenal and the best of the entire series. She mentioned that the third season is a bit of a departure from the first two, it will certainly be interesting to see where the show goes.

I'm not that hooked on the third season, I mean it's enjoyable but it lacks a punch

I'm halfway through Season 3 now and I think it may well be my favourite so far! Apart from the Birgitte starting her own party plot, I'm loving the eye candy additions of Birgitte's new British boyfriend Jeremy, TV executive Alex and gay leftie politician Jon. The latter played by the lovely Jens Albinus of The Eagle and several von Trier films fame, once again reinforcing the idea there's about 12 different working actors in the whole of Denmark! :D Glad there's less focus on her sourpuss daughter Laura this time.

I also liked Kasper's hairdo in the first few episodes (was it a WIG?). Shame he had to shave it all off :(

The DVD is due for release just before Christmas, so expect 5 weeks of double episodes starting very soon.

Any idea when Borgen is back on the BBC?

January, as ever. I've heard bad things about the third season from people who've watched it though - I watched the first couple of episodes and I think I can see what they're getting at. The overarching plot for the season looks like it can only really go one way and it doesn't seem like it'll have much scope for as much drama as the first two seasons.

This is back on Saturday.

I am simply not ready for Hanne Holm's new season's scarves.

I didn't watch this the first time round so I shall be KEEPING MY EYES PEELED for the old seasons popping up on Netflix

OMG OMG OMG

YES!

Birgitte Nyborg and Katrine Fønsmark confirmed. after years in opposition, Birgitte is back in government as Secretary of Foreign Affairs. I hope it involves selling off Greenland

Oh - I’m worried about this Foreign Affairs angle. Plenty of episodes set outside of Denmark with nothing to do with coalition politics no doubt.

oh my god. I've missed this show.

binged all 3 seasons last year to get ready for this and it was a holy experience.

:disco:

a lot of the oldies but goodies will be returning. DR hasn't confirmed Hanne Holm but I've seen her return mentioned elsewhere

I sense that it will partly be about Greenlandic independence. our monarchic imperialist ego isn't ready

It’s back - the new series is on Netflix worldwide from this Thursday :disco:

I bookmarked it as I always felt like Nordic noir would be interesting - but I haven’t seen any of the other series. Do I need to?

It’s not really noir. Not many people die. There was a whole episode about Danish pork industry in the last series. Its tone is closer to the West Wing.

If you haven’t seen Borgen, I would watch the very first season instead. If you don’t like the first two episodes, it’s probably not worth it.

yes, you need to watch the first seasons. highly recommend though!

this new season was very interesting with the Greenlandic geopolitics but on a whole middling compared to the first run. and no Hanne Holm :(

I guess I’ve just used Nordic noir as a catch-all term for stern looking scandos in slow-paced dramas. I don’t really need the noir, I just like alliteration

OMG I had no idea this was out already. I need need need to watch but have to wait a week and a bit. no spoilers here please!

Completely forgot this was on! Catching up now. Love the hot dorky piece with the fear of flying :disco:

I watched the first three seasons of this over the past several months. I’m very slow with tv as I never have it on but this was very good. I enjoyed it much more than I expected. I struggled a bit with the first episode of series 3 for a while when it looked like it was going in a different direction but I’m glad it found it’s path. My favourite moment was in series 3 with Hanne referring to her new look as “washed up old Soviet air hostess”.

just been watching the new Netflix season and it’s BRILLIANT

I've finally got around to watching this and it's so fantastic. episode 6 is one of the best hours of TV I've seen in years, the emotional stakes are so high.

it feels really dark, the way they've taken Birgitte down this increasingly corrupted path. it's a dance with the devil that feels like shockingly big operatic storytelling about power, ethics for sale and political downfall. i mean it's SO GOOD. the parallel storyline about Katrine running the newsroom and finding herself surrounded by snakes and assassins with just a couple of allies is wonderful too.

there was a scene where Birgitte meets her son for coffee in a cafe that moved me to tears, i wish it was on youtube. there are moments Birgitte is really on the brink (like all the time) and the show briefly makes you think she might get a moment of redemption, but there's always more scandal, more bad news, more reputational damage. it's a really different show now, it's no longer light viewing, but it's properly amazing television. the writers just GET IT.
