Dua Lipa — Illusion + Radical Optimism

ready for a new round of "she has no charisma! chorus where? she's never been a star!" :disco:

Might take a few more listens to get into it, but I still Houdini more at this stage.

The video is alright.

genuine dreadful video - seems like they did the best with what they had after cutting the violence/riot sequences but fuck it's boring

thank god the song is a BANGER

I’ve been so hyped for this ever since the clip and especially since the Grammys and I really love it. So much better than Houdini (which I’ve gone back to not caring about)

I can’t say I find the a cappella version particularly necessary

This is better than HOUDINI! There I said it!

It's also very Tame Impala vibes 🌠, I cannot wait for the whole thing.

Nope… this is… ??? Kinda nothing?

I prefer Houdini and don’t get the hate for that at all.

That’s good. Like Houdini (why is that hated?). Standard 8/10 decent Dua fare for me.

I listened to it and forgot about it 30 seconds later.

Sorry but she’s rubbish and as a pop star I find her quite basic.

Songs an 8, videos a 2.

Prefer it to Houdini I think, but I think both will age terribly and have no lasting impact

Top trip hop artists

1. Dababy
2. Massive Attack
3. Portishead

Dua Lipa’s spot on the list tbd

Although I said she’s rubbish I’m not going to be one of those who suddenly determines she’s a HUGE FLOP and ITS OVER

I don’t think this is the case. She probably peaked with the last era but will continue to do fine.

And as rubbish as she may be, I’m happy to accept Don’t Start Now as one of the best pop songs of the decade. Her songwriting, marketing and production teams really got it right when they landed on that one.

As the vessel, she does a servicable job but the song really spoke for itself anyway.

The video actively drains energy from the very good song.

They've gone straight in with an extended version too (and instrumental/acapella):

The market is rather over saturated with young female pop stars in her mould. If that Grammy performance is anything to go by she has plenty of career left.

This is fine, the verses are better than the chorus. I suspect this will grow and grow.

I think it will grow too. I think it needs a much chunkier bass though, a la Houdini. I think the song is great but the chorus needs more production.

still no announcement or date for the album. and now...

Are the label panicking?

I don't pay much attention to record label politics but is this suggesting a problem?

I am wondering if she should've gone away for longer. I really don't know, I mean Future Nostalgia was hardly yesterday but then she had a huge summer with her Barbie track, so maybe it's all too soon? Do people care enough?

I think she's just an unexciting pop star? Who STANS Dua Lipa? She's the epitome of "definitely I thought it was fun. I like the beat"

I really like Dua but she still lacks that spark for me somewhat (never was this more apparent than in the video for Prisoner with Miley who, on the other hand, absolutely has that X Factor). With Dua it often feels like a beautiful girl playing dress up as a pop-star - I don’t deny that the camera loves her but she never looks entirely comfortable in my opinion.
