I didn’t know until today that people didn’t like 2017. I’d put it ahead of 2014, 2015 and 2021 of the recent contests.
Now 2014 and 2015 really were FUCKING AWFUL contests in terms of their general quality (2011 being by far the worst in that regard, though obviously we're getting further and further away from it being all that recent). 2014's saving grace was the exceptional top three and 2015's was the v high quality top ten.

2019 and 2021 were classics too but it feels like basically *everyone* recognises that, whereas 2017 is a real underrated gem that you have to fight the corner of. I can proudly say it was ahead of its time, to be honest. It wasn't so commercialised. You had to really be a music lover, be a true fan of music and the love of being open to really appreciate that record. It's just a special piece in Eurovision's body of work that will forever live on. The older the contest gets the more people will come to appreciate it actually and check it out

2012 is for when I want to just feel my SOUK FANTASY with wall to wall bangertrondras
2016 is for when I want my synapses blown CLEAR OUT OF MY BODY
2017 is for when I need something a bit more DARK, CRUNCHY and COMPLEX, like RYVITA covered in PEAT

That’s exactly how I feel about 2000.

Probably the weakest since 2015 but still plenty to enjoy and I LOVED the chaos that was Kyiv.

Oh I will say that the hosts in 2017 were fucking DREADFUL and that there should really be a limit in the official rules of one straight man MAXIMUM among the hosts in ANY GIVEN CONTEST

As I text to Penny earlier this week, can you IMAGINE the stress right now if Raven Queen had actually won last year and we were all supposed to be heading back to Ukraine in 3 months? :D

OH there have been worse! Actually that's one reason 2021 didn't quite POP OFF for me, they were pretty crap. Tel Aviv's were alright but trying too hard, Lisbon's were pretty messy

Actually I quite liked 2017, shit jokes aside. At least they got their tits out

Yep - the winner really takes so much of the shine off 2017. Not just it being a horrible song, but his reactions during the voting, and prissy attitude afterwards. Europe really lost the collective plot that night picking that as its winner.

Not a vintage year but overall there are some great songs - France, Belgium, Greece, Montenegro :D, Sweden and the UK to name a few. The UK being horribly under-marked by the televoters. I thought it was a nailed on top ten and I never stop being annoyed by people saying ‘but 15th was GOOD for the UK!’. Shut up.

I rather enjoyed the shambolic presentation and hosting. It felt like it has been thrown together on two weeks’ notice (which of course it had!).

Yeah Salvador’s “Music isn’t about fireworks” was annoying, but that did set us up nicely for him having to pass the trophy on to Netta’s fireworky chicken song :D
Such a good point - the 2018 double bunch of Netta and Eleni was the antidote we needed.

I'd say that since 2017 actually, each winner has felt in some way a bit like a reaction to the one that came before

Don’t you think it’s more common than that?
Or at least I don’t think there are any/many winners that I’d put in the same box at its preceding winner

I wouldn't say 2015 felt like a really pronounced contrast to 2014, or 2014 to 2013. 2016 did to 2015 but it was also really much more obviously a reaction to something ELSE :D

You can hate me as much as you like, but I actually loved and still love the 2017 winning song (even if Salvador Sobral is a bit of a pompous little s*it) and I too think it was a great year overall.

I liked it a lot more when he sang it at the end with his sister, that was a sweet moment.

Still can’t believe he appeared in the Eurovision movie

I don't mind Salvador's victory. Regardless of his attitude (which seems to have improved since) it was such a joy to see Portugal finally get a win after being so crap for so long. Not to mention being able to then spend two weeks in Lisbon. :disco:

If he'd robbed someone clearly more deserving I might feel differently, but Bulgaria would have been a relatively forgettable winning song and obviously Italy got their moment a few years later. Plus it's always nice when the televote winner is the actual winner.
