Shall we have a thread? Inevitably there's going to be a lot of overlap with @AGinAg (39)'s old songs on the chart thread, but I feel with the Band Aid announcement today there's a chance it may not be Wham! again this year.

And I'd like somewhere to share new Christmas songs this year. Who do we have so far?

Oh go ahead. Obviously a remake of Band Aid wouldn't feature in the old songs topic.

I think this is the only time of year I take any active interest in the charts nowadays (my former inside chart geek cries).

Tom Grennan has shaved his chest and announced an Amazon exclusive

I’m not confident Band Aid will make it to Christmas number 1 again though.

Both have fallen back a little since (as they do this far ahead of Christmas week every year), but Mariah was #20 on Spotify UK at the weekend, and Wham! #21.

That's actually down on the same second weekend in November last year, when Wham! were #10 and Mariah #12.

Who does listen to Christmas songs in the second week of November? Are work Christmas parties starting already, or am I just later than most as I don’t play anything until December.

So who else has announced Christmas singles this year? I've seen Charlie Puth and Perrie mentioned on Moopy.

There must be a good chance Ariana's Popular is going to take off in a big way.

Like Sheena posted in the other thread, I bet the vast majority of it is playlisting being used in shops.

They're surely not doing a new Band Aid after how much of a PR disaster the last one was? Also, isn't it usually organised a bit further in advance than now?

Oh, so it's not an actual new recording then. Hope they keep the Dizzee Rascal lines

It's also 40 years since Wham!'s hit, so if that is heavily promoted it could stand a chance.

Then again it's also 30 years of Mariah's, so we could be in for a chart battle!

Wham! seems right to be #1, like it was last Christmas 🤗
Though where is Cher in those bets? Maybe not the #1 but there should be a visible chart place for her DJ Play A Christmas Song (2024 Remaster) or the version with Kelly Clarkson perhaps 🪄

I would imagine Wham! will get it even if it isn't heavily promoted, assuming there's nothing along the lines of LadBaby this year.

I think LadBaby have said publicly they will not release another Christmas song because of online trolls.🙌

The Pogues are DONE. If it didn’t make Christmas number 1 last year after Shane MacGowan died I can’t see it ever making it.

40 years since Wham and Band Aid and 30 years since Mariah. I feel so old.

Stay Another Day is 30 this year too, and The Power Of Love is 40. I can’t see much being said about THAT but has it really been THAT LONG?

If they’d bothered to do an update for Band Aid it might have challenged for number one but I can’t see a montage version selling enough copies to challenge the monster streaming numbers of Wham

The new Band Aid presumably won't be subject to ACR. And it's being released on CD single, which was £5.99 on amazon, which I imagine will put a lot of people off.

But I don't see it matching Wham and Mariah for streaming, even if it is given a prime spot on playlists. And I imagine most people who want to listen to the song would still search out the original anyway.

"Do They Know It's Christmas" is generally considered a bit, erm, "behind the times" lyrically these days. In its defence, it was a quickly written pop song, designed to raise some money for famine relief, not a thesis on infrastructure, colonialism and weather systems. Its job was to raise money and did that job extremely well. But is it that good a song? Not really, although the ending is super catchy.

It'll be Wham again, barring a major death.

Perhaps if it was released on the Xmas week itself with a massive promo push and getting it stocked at Supermarkets etc, it might manage enough people to give it a shot. I haven’t looked but they normally release it a few weeks in advance and I think it’ll be well out of physical and download steam by then.

Wham! and Mariah will peak the week after Christmas (I.e. chart on the 27th), and I assume the Christmas number one will be from the 20th. So with them on ACR from memory they only tend to do about 60-70k in the weeks outside the one with the day included? So it’s certainly possible for something else to take it.

Throughout this century we've gone from acts not bothering to compete because X Factor had it sewn up, to LadBaby having it sewn up, and now to old songs, if not having it sewn up exactly to having a huge advantage due to playlisting and how breaking a new Christmas song is so difficult, unless you're an Amazon exclusive.

Wham! have five physical formats released on 13th December which won't harm their chances.

What relatively new songs do well each year?

Leona, Elton John and Ed Sheeran, Ariana and Buble off the top of my head.

Only Elton John/Ed Sheeran is under a decade old out of those - although yes, it's all very much relative.

And is this the first year Elton and Ed will be subject to ACR? It'll be interesting to see how it compares on a level playing field. I hope Step Into Christmas beats it, at least.

Sia seems to make the charts every year too with Snowman. I still recall my daughter singing it word for word on Christmas Day for us all a few years back now.

That Elton / Ed duet is absolutely shocking and a stain on any Christmas playlist

I know a lot of the Christmas songs are a bit trite but I enjoy them more than most, even the likes of Shakin’ Stevens doesn’t get a skip by me. The closest I come to skipping on the classics is the Paul McCartney one which is a bit irritating

But I actively hate that duet.i wouldn’t call it a classic but because it’s Sheeran it gets included in everything now. Just diabolical. Ed Sheeran can’t even make a Christmas song inoffensive.
