I would say that a lot of snobbery towards chavs / peasants with the wrong accent comes from our own sense of insecurity. I'm sure the Royals just pity us all, and never worry about such lowly topics as class.

I don’t think it has to do with insecurities at all, it’s just like all other sorts of bias and bigotry something you get from your surrounding or upbringing.

Society in general is much more tolerant than in the past and while it’s a taboo and a bit of social suicide to be racist, it’s remarkable how ”regional racism” is still rather accepted (and not only within mine and KC’s family).
 
I think the lower middle class (who I suspect is the largest group) are the most class conscious. And they are aware on some level they are much closer to the working class than the upper middle class as much as they would hate to admit it, and that drives a lot of mockery.
