an alternative R&B appreciation thread (1 Viewer)

Anyone else here love this particular branch of R&B? I guess Frank Ocean comes to mind instantly but there is MUCH more. Janet Jackson's Velvet Rope could arguably be described as the start of this left-field and innovative take on R&B, but I'm not too versed on the history to make a definitive claim, nor would I feel comfortable doing so. Velvet Rope is significant though. For arguments sake we can also consider there is a lot of parallel here with neo-soul too.
