Are there any countries/places you wouldn't visit out of principle? (1 Viewer)

What did you see there Rachey?
A huge amount of sick strays which really upset me, but we also hired a car so drove around and saw dogs dead in the road, injured dogs and cats having stones thrown at them.

I'm guessing it's not so bad in the tourist areas but we went exploring and now I wish we hadn't.

On a side note, I once got told that you're one of two people, you either want to visit Australia or you want to visit America. I'm definitely the Australian side because I've been twice and am already planning a third trip.

This sounds like a load of nonsense to me. I've done the US several times but would love to do Australia, and see no reason why anyone should be one or the other.

I totally understand why someone wouldn't want to do the US politically, but considering the sheer diversity of landscapes on offer (before you even consider the cities) 'not seeing the appeal' if you're a lover of that seems illogical to me.

Australia doesn’t really appeal to me. There doesn’t seem to be much to do and that’s before you factor in the long journey. New Zealand on the other hand I’d definitely do.

I just got back from Oman, where homosexuality is illegal and woman have barely any role in public life, but I enjoyed the trip as an exploration of another world. So no, I don't think there is nowhere I would go on principle. But there are plenty of places I don't have much desire to visit.

I have only heard great things about Oman!

I'm also in the Dubai group. I see absolutely nothing appealing about it both in culture and scenery.

I wouldn't really be interested in any middle eastern country or anywhere I felt unsafe being female/in a lesbian relationship.

Having said that, we did go to St Petersburg a few years ago which I wasn't excited about and it turned out to be one of the most incredible places I've ever been.
I’m sorry but lumping the entire Middle East together and calling it unsafe for women or homosexuals is at best simplistic and at worst plain racist.

I’d argue that Lebanon is less hostile towards homosexuals than Russia or some other Eastern European countries which a lot here don’t mind visiting.

If you don't visit Lebanon at least once in your life, what's the point of even existing? She's that girl we knew she was.

I suppose middle eastern countries have just never been high on my radar. When I think of them, I think of Iraq, Iran, Syria, Qatar, and they don't hold much appeal to me. I'm sure there's many countries I'd enjoy visiting there. I just have other places I'd rather see first.
But who knows, I never had any interest in visiting South America but I'm here now.

Also, go with simplistic, because I'm definitely more simple than racist.

Oman and Lebanon are the two I've most wanted to go to and have half looked at teaching in (though Lebanon doesn't seem as easy to go to).

Honestly even large swathes of Europe are pretty much questionable for me at this point given what's going on.
I've always wanted to go to Finland but that border with Russia is pretty long!

Can't remember which country it was, I think Poland but I could be wrong, that launched use of guns as a lesson in schools, so that children will know how to protect themselves and family if need be. I was shocked but they interviewed parents and they seemed to be in favour.

Sorry for the off topic. Googled it and it's Poland indeed.

I've thought for about ten years now that I would love to visit Tehran. I hope I'll go one day. obviously women's rights are severely endangered there, and in other countries where that might be the case for women or the queers I'd definitely think on it and decide against going. so I don't know about hard and fast criteria for ruling anywhere out.

I'm half interested in China and what it's like to live in a regime like that, where the media is controlled by the regime - but also half expectant that I'd visit and just find a normal country with some excitement in the bigger cities and some boredom, bland weather and ugly, cramped modern architecture. I think I would visit for the great wall. but I'd also then go to Taiwan and see what I've heard is a really beautiful country without a lot of China's baggage / problematic nature.

I guess I would categorically rule out a tourist visa for North Korea and probably also going to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, but more because I find the oil money culture and displays of grossly excessive wealth that constitute their society to be quite repellent on a fundamental level. I don't understand what kind of place it can be with a 90% expat population drafted in to make money and leave again. it's not my idea of glam or enjoyment but I know many people (expats/freelancers etc) who've been, go regularly as tourists or have moved there for work and have loved it. so maybe I'm missing out.

I would love to go to Iran. It looks so beautiful in pictures. One of my good friends has Iranian parents and she goes every so often. I hope it’s realistic for me to go at some point
