I'm off to Athens for a long weekend tomorrow. Has anyone been, and what would you advise doing?

From looking at guidebooks it appears that there's about one day's worth of ruins to see, and that's about it!

I've never been, and other thanthe Parthenon, I've no real desire to, oddly.

A friend who went last year said it was a very dirty city, but then people also say that about Rome, and I adore it.

It ISN'T VERY NICE

Granted when I went it was part of a holiday which eventually ended up on Watchdog, but apart from the aforementioned Parthenon I wasn't impressed

Well that was crazy. I was there from Saturday to Tuesday, the situation got progressively worse each day. We went out on the Monday night and there were piles of burning rubbish on most street corners, blocking roads, burning cars, people actually looting shops! All flights out of Athens were cancelled on Wednesday, thankfully I was on the 4th to last flight out on Tuesday night...

Apart from the riots I have to say I wasn't thrilled by Athens, the Acropolis staff were on strike the entire time we were there (not related to the riots), so we never got to go in.

Possibly the most bizarre holiday I've been on, but definitely an interesting experience!

Oh I LOVED Athens when I went

But then it WAS Eurovision week :disco:

Girls I’m off to Athens with work in a couple of weeks and staying a few days after for a little holiday. I was thinking of getting a boat to a nearby island and staying a couple of nights, ideally somewhere less than an hour away, any hot island reccomendations?

Also what are my options in town if I feel the need to get filled with HOT GREEK LOADS of an evening?

q1:Assuming you'd be wanting to leave from Piraeus (cause it's easy to reach), within 1 hour's reach are: Aegina, Agistri, and Poros. Kea is within one hour's reach from Lavrio port. Finally, Salamina is a 15-minute ferry from the port of Perama. Alternatively, you can access lots of beaches via the coastal tram in Athens.
q2: In the islands very little, in Athens a lot.

I’ve chosen POROS to stay on which I know nothing about but it’s an hour on the ferry and the hotel was dirt cheap.

Good choice Lucy, it's a lovely and lush little island.
Btw Joanna Lumley in one of her documentaries shares that the first time she found herself in Poros was because she was trying to buy a ferry ticket to Paros but mispronounced it. :D

The way I’m Shazamming any old Greek TOOT that comes on in a bar and lusting after any vaguely TUBBY waiter.

I hope you haven’t done anything to anger Poseidon.

I mean I agree after the Greek guy I dated two years ago ghosted me.

My God, Athens last year got my arsehole twitching like it hasn’t twitched in YEARS.

It’s honestly TOO MUCH, as someone’s who’s libido has been in the GUTTER for 3 years, it’s alarming to have the near CONSTANT HORN.

Do you recommend Lucille and others and obviously SW? I would love to Thessaloniki and all the way down to Athens and some islands.

I truly truly don't like the north of the country. With some exceptions but Thessaloniki isn't one. For this time of the year i'd probably recommend Nafplio in the Peloponnese, or Ioannina in Epirus.

I liked Athens a lot. There's some great museums and historical sites obvi, had a lovely time in a bear bar, and took a ferry out to a little island which was lush.

Also it was pretty cheap compared to basically every other city break I've been on.
