my standard breakfast in Madrid was un croissant con queso y un café con leche POR FAVOR. the other customers ate the pan con tomate though, I'll try it out next time

I remember Jetep (LOL :manson: ) taking me to a fabulous little cafe where we had chocolate and churros

REALLY thick hot chocolate (pretty much the consistency of a bar of chocolate melted), with sweet doughnut fried strips. YUM.

Well they eat it all the time, not just for breakfast, but as she said they were going to walk and do tourism, I suggested it as healthy breakfast that also gives you energy for the day. I had it for breakfast for 3 years and I never got bored, just too good.

I never had croissant with cheese for breakfast :D I don't know what the typical breakfast in Madrid is, but some people even have a pincho of tortilla (the real spanish omelette with potatoes).

Oh god I hate Churros/chis chis. Loved them as a child but had them last summer for first time in about 15 years. NO THANKS :D

Ohhh something you can't miss if you like desserts is one of the best ones ever: crema catalana. Not sure how to explain this, it's like a delicious cream, with caramelized sugar on top. I ALWAYS have it when I'm in BCN.

That's pretty much the same as the French Crème brûlée, a dinner party staple since the 70s here!

Can VoR correct me on the accents there if I've got them wrong, please?

mmh tortilla con cebolla. I really need to go to Spain soon

I've got a cab or the airport bus and got off at Placa Catalunya, which was fine for where we were staying at the time. I think it stopped elsewhere as well. It's reliable and frequent, although I remember it being a bit of a scrum to get it back to the airport. Never used RENFE for that journey.

It might be a bit late to help but we went out to Tarragona on our second visit, really nice town if you just like to explore, and there's some really good architecture.

I used the train link both times and never had a problem beyond it being a bit full.

The airport bus is best to get to the city centre, you get it just outside arrivals and it takes you right into the city centre and it's so easy as Plaza Catalunya is the very last stop so you can't go wrong. It stops just opposite a very good big department store called El Corte Ingles.

I'm going here in... oh, less than two weeks now. Any TIPS, people? And yes, I did accidentally book for during PRIDE... as ameraal let me know (even though it became slightly obvious that something was up when trying to find decent hostels was proving a lot harder than I expected.)

I mean, I basically have no idea what i'm planning to do there. Drinking. Picasso museum. Listening to "Mi Chico Latino" whilst drunk on the beach. I'm brilliantly disorganised.

I don't really have anything to add over what I've already said in this thread.

I'm sure I saw that one of the papers (probably The Guardian?) has a free Barcelona travel guide this weekend. And I'd have a look on iTunes to see what free podcasts you can find.

TEN YEAR BUMP!

taking off on Wednesday to Barcelona on a very hastily organised trip (tonight) for a week with friends. it's a working break and we got an Airbnb in Sant Antoni - any tips for nice cafés to work from, chic brunch spots, tapas joints, bars, markets and hipstery shopping areas etc. are appreciated!

def want to go to Parc de Montjuic, what are the other essential explores? and beaches accessible by train for the weekend?

THANKS EURO HUNS

I'm not going to the cinema in 30° heat :D

thanks for the tips y'all!

Just roam, El Born and the Gothic Quarter are good for getting lost in and eating at random little bars. Eat Pinchos, go see the Sagrada Familia, eat seafood at the Port, get pickpocketed on Las Ramblas. Barca is Fucking ace.

doing Gothico tonight and Gracia and the Bunker del Carmel tomorrow. can't wait!

Its cool, and it has that big city energy without being ridiculously expensive, as long as you stay out of the obvious traps. Great architecture, nice people, beaches, food. Decent cheap coke. Basically everything. I miss it.

highlights so far:

- climbing the Bunker del Carmel and reaching the top at the cusp of sunset to find loads of locals just chilling with drinks and watching the skyline
- taking the train to Castelldefels for a day at the beach under the most perfect sky. beautiful sea, beautiful waves.
- days at the city beaches like Bogatell, which are also surprisingly beaut
- finding bars and restaurants in el Born including a nice vegetarian place on a very Italianate square where a performer was dancing with fire torches :disco:
- hot Tinder guys being actually interested in me. yes bitch.
- shopping on the marvellous Passeig de Gracia, which is like London if London wasn't dirty, gross and overwhelming
- the métro having aircon and being the coolest place when it's 32° out

it wasn't top of my list or anything but I'm gagging to come back and i ain't even LEFT YET!
