Seems odd to me (and I imagine those of a certain vintage) that he isn't most remembered for being Yosser Hughes.

RIP Yosser.

It's a testament to him that you can still say "gizza job" to people of a certain age and they reply "I can do that". Boys From The Blackstuff was the first time I realised other peoples dads were on the bones of their arse too.
It's probably the first real social commentary drama I can remember from my childhood.

I remember the Boys from the Blackstuff scene from childhood, and of course Titanic, but it’s Theoden from Lord of the Rings for me. I genuinely think he should have had a Best Supporting Actor nomination for one of Towers/Return of the King. He’s one of the very best things in both.

My first thought was Yosser Hughes as well. BFTB was a really significant piece of television.

Yeah agree with @VoRonika - I have very distinct memories of him in LOTR and while he was often called out for his understated performance he doesn’t get enough credit for what he brought to the role.

His performance and also John Noble’s were my first realisation that the fantasy genre could lean on gritty realism and politics and a huge contribution to why I became interested in the genre. They are LOTR’s link to the likes of Game Of Thrones.

He was also fantastic in Shirley Valentine.

RIP to a great actor.
