Finished it now and it was SO GOOD. I haven’t been so riveted by a book in a long time. Wonderful.
WAIT FOR ME@Suedey I have started reading the
WAIT FOR ME
Iris Murdoch's The Bell? I do love it so, such a surreal delight. I must re-read it one day.
One of the best books of all time!!I am reading The Vegetarian.
And it is GREAT.
It gets better. It took me a couple of attempts as well to finish it off. I had to resort to alternating between the audiobook and the paperback to get through but somewhere around the 150-page mark I was hooked. I really enjoyed it. But then I do enjoy 'misery porn' as it were. See also: A Little Life.I’m on my second attempt to get through Shuggie Bain after giving up on it last year. I think I’m going to give up again. The relentless misery just isn’t doing it for me. I’m 120 pages in and losing faith that anything else is going to happen in it.
It’s just so repetitive! Not just the plot but the descriptions. If I read the phrase ‘milky tea’ or somebody searches their dry lips with their tongues one more time…
It reminds me of the sort of stuff that was super popular around the time of ‘a child called it’.
I tried to read A Little Life but it was making me so sad. I want to try again at some pointIt gets better. It took me a couple of attempts as well to finish it off. Noooooooooooooo@Suedey just so you know, I finished The Bell (4/5) and I’ve lost count of how many books you were supposed to read with me but didn’t.
How did you finish The Bell so quickly @RaspberrySwirl ?! I'm so sorry. I should finish this piece of trash Crawdads things this week after which I will throw it into the trash.
No spoiler please! It's next on my listetteQuickly? It took me about three weeks to read. Read most of it on the plane to and from Vienna.
I really enjoyed it. I love her style and I see some similarities to The Sea, the Sea (which was even better). I didn’t know what it would be about (as I avoid all spoilers) and so I was very surprised when it turned out it had a gay theme.
