Do you like Taylor Swift?

I skimmed the article because I don't have time for Gawker's brand of hatred but it's just a load of crap. I agree she's plastic and comes out fake but she's hardly satan's spawn.

the gawker article is a bit weird. from the in your face headline, to the rough first half and the almost apologetic second part.

at any rate people and the media just need to take a break from idolising celebrities.

Also at the moment, a negative article from Gawker is actually a good thing.

I'm surprised there wasn't any discussion on here about Gawker massively shitting the bed last week by abetting a blackmailer - they're the lowest of the low.

Yeah and the best way part is the gloating from every other website. They are scum and I love that they are kinda imploding.

I'd just like to venture at this juncture that Bad Blood is a really shit song with an overrated video.

it's a really poor song that wouldn't have done anything if it wasn't attached to her name.

the less said about the gawker and that whole brand of "journalism" the better. oh and watch it get much worse.

I warmed to Blank Space and Shake It Off despite her still-irritating vocal affectations, but Bad Blood is just WEAK.

It also sticks in my craw a bit that little miss 'women shouldn't tear down women' packed a video full of her celebrity mates for a single that's basically a thinly veiled excuse to rip into Katy Perry.

I had no idea Bad Blood was about Katy Perry :o Blank Space is utterly magical, but overvalued really is quite the word (same situation as with Ed Sheeran) for the other singles from this era, with Style in particular being a rather boring dirge.

I like her fake front row award ceremony behaviour, the snippet of the song about James Deen (the skinny porn star I hope) I've never heard the whole way through, and the icky, bitchy Bible girl sass of Shake It Off. She feels like a Smack the Pony spoof, otherwise I wouldn't be remotely interested.

don't you mean she's a disingenuous feminist? :angle:

No! Because her feminism isn't intersectional. It erases or denies the legitimate concerns of women of colour. For example, I'm not a fan of Nicki Minaj, but she made a very valid point about the way that the work and bodies of women of colour can be treated in the music industry (and many industries), the way that their contribution to pop culture and what not can be denied or erased and then co-opted. Taylor's response is to make it about her, through a faux-feminist argument, and instead of listening to what Minaj was trying to say, unfollowed her from Twitter.

To me, thats the kind of feminism that only cares about, privileges and sees, the oppression of white women, and ignores the struggles of those women whose identities hit multiple intersections.

I'm 99% sure - but COULD BE WRONG, please someone correct me if I am - that Nicki didn't actually mention anything to do with race until AFTER Taylor responded, up until Taylor's response Nicki's tweets seemed to be focused on body types. It just feels worth mentioning that Nicki sort of twisted what she claims she meant after Taylor involved herself, which is one of the reasons they both come off looking bad in this (Taylor still comes off worse)

She doesn't need to do that in a single tweet. Nicki's politics has ALWAYS addressed women of colour. I can't believe I'm saying 'Nicki's politics'. I don't even like her. :gross:

Nicki explicitly mentioned race after her and Taylor's "beef" made headlines and she was, as always, portrayed as the "angry black girl".

THIS. Not to mention Taylor Swift grew up rich and privileged, her family moved with her to Nashville when she was a young teenager so she could pursue a music career etc. A privileged white woman claiming victimization from a black woman is incredibly insulting, and would be the equivalent of a random white woman saying "I have it the worst because of the gender wage gap, misogyny, poor me etc. etc." when there are women of color mutilated on their genitals, or sold everyday into human trafficking. Recognize your feminism of course, but put it in fucking context, Taylor Swift, or just know when to not talk about yourself

FUCK TAYLOR SWIFT

I agree to an extent, but Nicki's original tweets specifically mention body shape and only very vaguely allude to race ("different kind of artist", which again in context sounds more like she means "a thin artist" not "a white one"). It just feels like Taylor probably thought she was getting into a discussion/feud about different body types and then it got turned into a race issue AFTER she responded, which seems a bit unfair in a way

To be fair, in regards to race Nicki's first tweet went over my head. I thought she was commenting on beauty standards or something.

I'm still team NM though. And I'm glad Katy finally said something, basic maybe, but she's shown way more class than Taylor in this whole 'spat'.

For the record I'm totally on Nicki's side in this case, think Taylor DOES have some issues with race, and think Taylor came across as an idiot regardless of what point in the discussion she chimed in

Babe, I can't explain intersectionality repeatedly. These categories don't exist independently of each other. Our bodies ARE inflected by race. Nicki just euphemised the implicit conversation about race in her tweet. :disco:

i think they're both twats. the first one (with her fake, caricature body) moaning about not getting a nomination for a crap song with a crap video and the second one clutching pearls from her ivory tower.

apropos has nicki ever given us cause to believe she even knows what's intersectionality? genuinely asking, i don't follow her or her music.

i fucking love her

well, her music at least. she seems like a right cunt. a pretty one at that.

I neither liked nor disliked her at the time of the poll but now she's FUCKING AWFUL. Shake It Off is a load of SHIT, Bad Blood is basically 'hey guys, let's redo the chorus of We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together but with an INFINITELY SHITTER HOOK', and if I have to listen to another grating FAUX-IRONIC DRAWLING MIDDLE EIGHT about 'god AREN'T BOYS SO LAME' I'm going to have to APOLOGISE ON BEHALF OF ALL WHITE PEOPLE for the EXISTENCE of this MILQUETOAST PISS CHASM OF A POPSTAR

Taylor Swift's attempt to dig herself out:

I agree with Jark.

And I saw her in Dublin the other week. She's come a long way has our Taylor.

It doesn't seem like an attempt to dig herself out more than it is just a simple cop out of "Oh I didn't know" and a quick backtrack to keep her fans in check. She's so fake.
