Big city life?

Ok, a week is harsh. But a winter would properly test you. Less than six hours of daylight on the shortest day, cold wet and windy to a degree unheard of in the south, and your closest "city" is Inverness!

My aunt moved away from Orkney because of the depressing winters, and it is 1) more connected and 2) further south. Whilst I have never been to Shetland myself whilst old enough to remember (I think I was 2 when my parents took me there), I am very familiar with the Outer Hebrides and it is hell on earth.

I went to uni with a girl from the Shetland Islands, and she’d never been on an escalator until she moved to Glasgow.

Is it really that bad? 😮

We've looked at doing a cruise around all the islands up there. Which I know would be completely different to living there.

In my head I picture myself living in a remote cottage, growing my own veg, talking to the 20 other residents, celebrating the one day of sunshine.

I'd like to do a voluntary program on one of the islands for a couple of months. I imagine after that I'd be ready to leave.

I don't know if we have an escalator on the island you know 🤔 we have a travelator.

I think I'd only go to the Shetlands for the knitwear opportunities

I went to Uni with a girl from London who had never seen a cow in real life. So yer know... cows can't use escalators.

I'm always surprised at just how far the Shetlands are. Orkney is a hop over the ocean from John O' Groats but the Shetlands are that then another big 200 mile gap away (ish).

Plus I hate boats. I can't imagine having to use one every time I need to go to Asda's or Peacock's, and imagine how difficult it'd be to get anything delivered!

We met a lady on our last cruise who lives in Lerwick on the Shetland isles. She told us they still have Amazon Prime. So I reckon I could live there fairly easily.

I’m zone 3/4 now, and whilst it still feels quite urban here, I was horrified to pass a HARVESTER on the bus home last night so maybe I’m just kidding myself.
Is it the dilapidated one in Dulwich?

Yeah I can’t think of one bit of zone 1 I’d actually want to live in
I think I'd be perfectly happy living in Bayswater, on the fringes of Hyde Park, or around Goodge St and Warren St! it's not all chaos.

The one in Upper Norwood. There’s one in DULWICH?!?
There's one on the corner that is closed-down? Maybe that isn't Dulwich. I used to drive by it when I lived in Dulwich Village. It was a wreck!

I'd VERY happily live in MOST of Zone 1! But not in a basement or studio or flatshare :gross:
