Eastenders 2023 (3 Viewers)

So what’s all that crap about next of kin? Also didn’t Phil adopt Jay years ago when he changed his name to Mitchell? So it would be him.

It was stupid. Even where the police are involved, that's not how "next of kin" works. I don't think he was formally adopted by Phil, he just took the Mitchell name in order to be part of the family. I'm pretty sure that Billy fostered Jay, though. They went so far as to mention it in the episode, even he is now an adult.

When my brother had a stroke in 2020 and my cunt sister-in-law wasn’t telling us anything, all we had to do was call the hospital and just say “I’m his mother/father/sister” and they’d tell us what we needed.

In short it was a nonsense episode extender. Pretty sure no one has ever asked for ID in a hospital.

Exactly. I suppose, if nothing else, it was necessary in order for all the characters to come to a realisation about the way they'd treated Jay and reflect on how he actually is family in the non-biological sense. Some lovely scenes came out of that.

Great stuff for Billy tonight, and this storyline has also made me realise how much I'm liking Gina. Took a while to bed in but she feels like she could be a classic EE character in the making.

Ridiculous that Cindy never questioned the name Wicks for “someone who used to live around here”. She’d never know about what happened to Linda, but come on.

This is explained in tonight's episode:

She knew Dean was from the Wicks family, which is why she initially hid the name from Ian, given their history.

I'm not sure about this, I think they're going to have to play it quite carefully and I hope there's more to it than what tonight's episode gave us. Having Dean return in what is clearly full-on soap villain mode feels a bit uninspired (and a bit contrived to put him in the frame as the Xmas body), I think it could've been more interesting to have him appear to be repentant for what he did, even if it ended up being an act.

Dean definitely fits well with the reaction that all the women had to the body on the floor enough to make him a candidate. But I'm inclined to agree; re-introducing and then killing him within the space of two months feels a bit of a cop-out.

I know Dean wasn't ever properly punished for what he did to Linda, but he did get his retribution (only in soap narrative terms, I hasten to add) from Shirley trying to drown him and then disowning him. The show is good right now, so I'm going to guess they have a decent plan with this, but it does feel a little like an unnecessary coda.

The thing that I’m most concerned about is that the first big storyline Linda has had without Mick is basically a rerun of her greatest hit. Could they not think of something new for her?

I’ve seen people saying that having Dean only back for two months is a bit of a cop-out but actually I only think he’d really have worked as the Christmas death if he had been a shock return on Christmas Day or something.

This way, we’ve got to put up with him for two months before a death we can see coming a mile off, and then if it turns out not to be him on Christmas Day, then what? They can’t possibly redeem him (and I sincerely hope they won’t try) so what do they do with him?

So who is Sharon marrying on Christmas Day? It's definitely not Keanu now, or Dorian. It seems too late to introduce someone new for a whirlwind romance. Maybe it's just a ruse or a fancy dress party.

Is this Karens exit storyline? It’s all very FAR FETCHED and a bit out of the blue.

I reckon it’s still Keanu, and she won’t find out what he did until the wedding day.

I've seen some wags online saying that they've now turned Karen Taylor into Karen Matthews :basil:

Two returns:

Penny was a VERY minor character last time she appeared, as I recall Jack was somehow responsible for her losing the use of her legs?

25ish I think! She was definitely not a teenager yet last time she appeared.

They look like they're dressed for a funeral. I wonder if Cora or another Branning relative might have passed away, or could it be the funeral for the Xmas victim :o

It absolutely won't be Mick in some weird return story.

Mick's weird non-death was definitely a trapdoor so Dyer can return in the future if he wants, it seems really unlikely they'd bring him back just to kill him off permanently straight away :o

It was just a ridiculous way to leave it open. He’d have to do a Harold Bishop, which doesn’t really work in 2023 UK. It’s not like there are any desert islands around here!

Mick with amnesia being having somehow been found by AUNT BABE (more rotted and evil than ever) is the dream return storyline in a few years' time, for me.

The Kathy and Rocky storyline has taken a major step up this week with Cindy’s involvement.
