EBU issues statement on Eurovision 2019 Grand Final jury result
Posted 22 May 2019 at 18:29 CEST

"The Belarusian jury was dismissed following the reveal of their votes from the first Semi-Final which is contrary to the rules of the Eurovision Song Contest. In order to comply with the Contest’s voting regulations, the EBU worked with its voting partner digame to create a substitute aggregated result (calculated based on the results of other countries with similar voting records), which was approved by voting monitor Ernst & Young, to determine the Belarusian jury votes for the Grand Final."

"The EBU can confirm, following standard review practices, we have discovered that due to a human error an incorrect aggregated result was used. This had no impact on the calculation of points derived from televoting across the 41 participating countries and the overall winner and Top 4 songs of the Contest remain unchanged.

To respect both the artists and EBU Members which took part, we wish to correct the final results in accordance with the rules. The correct jury points have now been added to the scoreboard and the revised totals for each participating broadcaster, and their country, have been published on eurovision.tv.

The EBU and its partners digame and Ernst & Young deeply regret that this error was not identified earlier and will review the processes and controls in place to prevent this from happening again."

The corrected result
  1. Netherlands (498 points)

  2. Italy (472 points)

  3. Russia (370 points)

  4. Switzerland (364 points)

  5. Sweden (334 points)

The biggest practical impact on the show is that North Macedonia actually won the jury vote, so Tamara both gains a position overall and was spared the indignity of having her low televote be the final reveal moment of the night. That would have robbed us of John's sore loser face and been much less tense.

Cyprus now left hand on the leaderboard. Slovenia shoved down two places.

San Marino gain a place despite losing points.

Another kick in the cunt for poor old Germany, now down to second last overall as Belarus are rewarded for their fuckery by climbing a place. :D

Israel actually scored NUL POINTS from the Jury.

The legit (albeit still entirely made up :D) Belarusian Jury vote appears to have been

12 Malta
10 North Macedonia
08 Cyprus
07 Italy
06 The Netherlands
05 Azerbaijan
04 Switzerland
03 Greece
02 Sweden
01 Russia

The incorrect scores given on the night were

12 Israel
10 Estonia
08 Germany
07 Norway
06 Spain
05 United Kingdom
04 San Marino
03 Serbia
02 Iceland
01 Australia

That would've been Malta's only 12, right? So poor Michaela was denied that moment in addition to being shown reacting to her low televote score.

The original vote was working from bottom upwards. I think some of us assumed they'd done that deliberately as punishment! How can they not have spotted this when it stood out a mile???

The EBU going from strength to strength :side-eye:

Are we sure this wasn't intentional? A John Lundvik final 2 moment was much more exciting than a Tamara final 2 moment, let's face it.

It might have made it slightly more exciting but anyone would have realised that there was no way on earth John would be able to overtake The Netherlands score.

The whole situation is completely embarrassing. It was so blatantly obvious the Belarus back up jury score was wrong - I mean giving all the bottom countries points including the ONLY points to Israel? They even had 24 hours to confirm this result and no one picked up on it, when we all knew instantly it was wrong. Who checks things like this? Someone's head should roll over it.

I really feel sorry for Keiino, they had 5 seconds of glory and there was no mention of them winning the televote ANYWHERE in the show, instead they spent 40 minutes on a jury vote, the focus is way too much on that and the blatant vote swapping, political voting etc was ridiculous.

And let's not even get started on the numerous errors with the ranking of some of the jurors. Too many mistakes are being made, and the whole thing needs an overhaul. As someone who's job is in data analysis and making sure everything is accurate, it makes me so angry that stupid mistakes like this are made.

Lets face it: as satisfying as John Lundvik being knocked down a peg or two was, NOTHING would have been more fabulous than the previous few years voting reveals with the dramatic tension slowly revealing Keiino TOPPED the televote. Michal Szpak WHO!

I feel so sad for how robbed they've actually been - not only for that moment they didn't get, but there's an argument that they were robbed of an actual Eurovision win considering how clearly popular they were on the televote in both semi and final. To rub salt even further, today they drop a place in the official results!

It really is a bit odd that neither the winner of the televote nor the winner of the jury vote were in the top 5

In addition - I’ve read a few times today a Czech jury voter in semi final 1’s votes were wrong which potentially meant Belarus accidentally qualified instead of Poland, does anybody know if THAT is true?

I doubt the EBU would address that if so, an entire delegation not qualifying because of a jury fuck up is QUITE BAD FORM - especially with Jon Ola Sand taking to Twitter to tell the world how close the voting was!

Let's hope that's another nail in the coffin of this revised televote reveal sequence.

That's definitely true.

Just get rid of the jury, they're an embarrassment.

Much as I love Belarus this year, I did think how much better Poland probably would have done in the final. Even more absurd if they lost out due to an "error" :D (if the Czech thing is true)

I didn't mind the voting reveal this year but it was an unnecessary change so hopefully they just go back to the old one.

They won’t address that because it isn’t an EBU fuck-up and whether it reflected the juror in question’s preferences or not, they still filled out the form correctly. They didn’t repeat any countries or accidentally vote for Canada or anything so there’s no reason to “fix” what was technically a legit vote.

So they can't manage to get the votes of a few groups of 5 people right, but manage with the televote of hundreds of thousands across dozens of countries. Lovely.

Thanks 4 clarification!

It's unbelievable a few of the jurors aren't able to do it right, and even more that nobody checks that. I mean, even when they send "correct" votes, if they see something weird they should ask or do something about it, because then you have things like the Swedish jury that her votes in the final are the opposite than in the semi, because she got confused. And that makes no sense at all.

i can't believe all this stuff about jury members getting votes wrong. i mean seriously.

i do believe juries have a part to play but as has been said giving their votes so much weight in the live show and all these fuck ups are really not ok.
faking suspense is just another super annoying constructed reality trope that makes me yearn for the days when the robots take over.

Fuming for Poland. I liked their song. How has this all come out?
Can we rewrite previous semi flops?

What the fuck are you on about? :D I'd wager basically everyone watching thought there was a good chance John would've been able to overtake him, because NOBODY WAS SAT THERE DOING THE MATHS OF HOW MANY POINTS WERE LEFT TO GIVE!
