Electric cars

Right, so I've decided I'm going to get myself one. Does anyone here have an electric? Any recommendations please?

And anyone that says Tesla will be reported. No Elon Musk ever!

Polestar are fully electric, made by Volvo, high quality build, don't look shit. Most of the major marques are doing full electric offerings now. The Audi e-tron range looks nice, someone on my road has one. If money is no object the fully electric Porsche would be my choice, one zipped past me the other day and I got a semi on.

Not to be the party pooper, but please keep in mind that electric cars also experience malfunctions, that most workshops don't have a clue on how to repair electric cars, that in several countries technicians need to have special training on specific electric cars, that this training is not that common, that repairing on an unauthorized or non manufacturer's workshop could cause more damage both to the car and the services you could be entitled to, that repairing on a manufacturer's workshop is commonly more expensive than elsewhere and that even for the simplest malfunction the cars cannot be repaired on the road (ie you cannot and shouldn't ever attempt to jumpstart an electric) and will need towing for 99,99% of problems.

I’ve got a specialist Kia garage where I live and they’ve all had the training to work on electric cars

It sounds like you are being a bit of a party pooper to be honest. :)

the new Honda E is a bit of a design masterpiece

lovely interior too, but quite small.

the Polestar 2 is everywhere in Amsterdam. it's absolutely beautiful.

I saw one of those Honda E's on the road, they are indeed a fun little wagon. Shit for my purposes though. I do quite fancy the Polestars. We're looking at signing our company up to a scheme like the Cycle one where you get way cheaper electric car leases.

What sort of range do you need @Suedey? Lots of the smaller ones like the Honda E are only really suitable for city (and adjacent) driving. If that works then there is so much choice - the Mini Electric or the Peugeot e208 would be my choice.

I have a soft spot for the Hyundai Ioniq 5 because it is an astonishingly good looking car. Like if a Delorean mated with an Austin Maestro.

Once you get into BMW, Merc, Audi etc. the cost still feels quite prohibitive.

Thanks @Kratz . I'd quite like something with a bit of range ideally especially if I am going to (eventually) get rid of my current (petrol) car.

I have to say I quite like the look of the BMW i range - quite pricey though :shy:

I've heard good things about the Audi e-tron but that would turn me into an Audi driver!!!!1!!!!

the Hyundai really does look amazing. and somehow it's huge but looks compact. are their interiors still made of HARD PLASTICS though?
Good point but I am amazed at how many high end cars still have hard plastic here and there.

Very pricey (the i3 isn’t bad but it’s probably an acquired taste and will be replaced before long).

The Ioniq looks amazing and Hyundai’s are generally very reliable. The e-tron isn’t a bad idea at all and it is quite understated. I would either want an electric car that was purposefully cutting edge in design (like the Honda E or the Ioniq) or which didn’t try too hard to look like an electric car - I think the e-tron does that quite well.

I’ll definitely be getting an electric car when I replace my current one.

Oh I forgot about the Hyundai Ioniq 5 - they really do look snazzy, like the cars of the future from childhood. (with less wings)
Exactly this! :D

iX3 will be a good choice @Suedey - BMW has put a lot of thought into it (as opposed to popping an electric engine into a combustion car).

I have an Audi e-tron Sport 55. It’s marvellous. But then it costs enough for that to be the case.

Charging can be a pain in the cunt, though. The infrastructure remains annoying, though it gets better all the time.

My boss has a BMW X5 plug-in hybrid that's been back to the garage numerous times for small niggly issues. She says she'd love it if it just worked properly but she doesn't trust it so whenever she's going any distance she borrows her son's Volvo.

If you're going fully-electric I would suggest that you research charging point locations once you've chosen, but not yet signed up for, a car. I was looking at Teslas (I know you don't want one) and their Superchargers are few and far between up north.

The Kia EV6 is based in the same platform as the Ioniq 5 but comes with the 7 year warranty. It’s been getting as good as reviews as the Ioniq with some interesting styling.

I like that both look like the future and not just a redo of a combustion engine car.

The Ioniq is quite something in the flesh though. It’s absolutely huge.

Update: I've organised some test drives.

Had one last week for Tesla (I KNOW) - just as a benchmark/comparator. I liked the way it drove but I really did not like the SPARTAN interiors and it's still ugly on the outside.

Ioniq next. Then Mini Electric and finally BMW iX3.

I know I'm like Britney and turtlenecks. So random.
