In the sense that it's an uptempo song and he dances, then yes, it's a complete rip off. :side-eye:

Denmark is pretty much identical to how it was at DMGP.

I am devastated by Portugal. The outfits are hideous. I loved the white fringe; it's funny how something so simple can open up a performance and give it some levity and accessibility. I think I'm going to bombard him with Instagram messages.
 
Austria now - simple, passionate, lovely, strong vocals.

I like this a lot but I wonder how much of an audience it has. Would love for it to slip through though.

I was expecting Luca to have an outfit that looked like he'd put in a tiny bit of effort. Maybe it's just a day 1 thing.
 
Sweden and Austria swapped places for today's rehearsal.

Sweden much the same as in Melfest, maybe a bit brighter? Huge applause in the press centre at the end, anyway.

Morning thoughts

Croatia - They've gone full camp. He starts off in hell then gets his angel wings and literally ascends into heaven. :D This could be the big novelty qualifier.

Malta - Really cool and colourful. She's a bit tentative but the stage looks great. Offstage BVs from Destiny who won Junior a few years ago.

Lithuania - As expected.

Russia - He's all in white, performing in front of a bunch of LED 'mirrors' to create an effect of 8 or so Sergeys onstage. It looks very slick, but it's quite... boring? I expected a lot more from this. Not a winner.

I heard some pretty negative things about Malta (a mess, vocally poor) so I hope you are right. I love the song.
 
Norway quite restrained really. They're dressed in black, no furries. Smoke machine/dry ice effect on the floor and some pyro at the end. They're the first act to use the catwalk I believe. Sami man sounds much more confident.

Duncan from Netherlands strapped to the piano throughout. No bells & whistles, he's just singing it, very well, and looking right down the camera. I think they've pitched it just right, it doesn't seem desperate or gimmicky. It just remains to be seen whether this is what people want from a Eurovision winner.

I read some very mixed reviews of the Dutch rehearsal. I hope it will all come together in the end.
 
Was Azerbaijan as good as the odds promise? It's all the way up to 6th already!
 
Azerbaijan was great fun. As kitchen sink as ever, but it works I think.

I'm not convinced it can win - most likely the market responding to the last rehearsal of the day being so striking after nobody else truly knocked it out of the park.
 
From that clip, the stage for Malta looks great.

Happy that Azerbaijan had s good set of rehearsals it’s probably in my top 3 this year
 
Also as much as I can appreciate what Russia are trying to do, that song really does nothing for me
 
Nearly all rehearsals witnessed and with a few exceptions what a DRY YEAR.

Tulia have shockingly REMOVED THEIR REVOLVING STAGE

And in gay storm-in-a-teacup news, the tempting sounds of TAMTA :disco: have been under fire for the horrendous nocals in this performance clip:


But apparently the sound is un-mixed, and also: ITS A REHEARSAL.
 
That revolving stage was the only good bit of Poland!

Australia:


Whilst this obviously looks amazing, I think the staging looks a bit alienating and almost TOO POLISHED/music video like (see also: Sweden last year). I'm sure it will do well, but not as well as people are saying RN. I also think this will once again struggle to get a strong televote (Australia + Popera + alienating staging isn't exactly a recipe for GREAT success going on past form).

Portugal:


This makes me so sad. The outfits really do change the mood of the whole thing. It feels very dark and depressing, whereas the white felt uplifting. Conan himself apparently said in his press conference he's very unhappy with his rehearsal and how the broadcaster are handling things. I think this will still qualify as the song is much better than the dreck in this semi, but it's not the glorious potential winner I was hoping for several months back :(

Iceland:


This looks FABULOUS! I think this will smash the televote for both the semi and final.
