Oh
Also
You want to make it apolitical?
Take the voting/contest part out and call it a "cultural festival".
Put in place a "candidate city" scheme like the Olympics do and no one competing against no one.
Then, yes, it could be close to being called "apolitical".

Also, they've clearly let Israel RUN AMOK this year behind the scenes. Probably because a) they don't want to be accused of the usual "OH YOU'RE NOT 100% IN FAVOUR OF OUR ACTIONS, YOU MUST BE ANTI- SEMITIC" trope and, more likely, b) because of the Moroccanoil sponsorship.

I'm actually aghast that EBU preferred to open war with a broadcaster of such a pacific country as The Netherlands and are behaving like Israel's little puppies, being afraid of cutting them out.
It's unfair and by this point so blatantly done that they're not even trying to disguise it.

I said it before, but the censorship of speech/ negative comments/ what people wear is in ITSELF a political act. I don't understand how they can't get that.

I’d argue that the very fact Israel are represented (particularly this year) is a political act, but even more so when the EBU did everything to ensure even the most milquetoast displays of solidarity with Palestine were censored.

I’d have been so interested to see how they would have dealt with Bashar Murad’s participation had he been selected for Iceland.

At the very least, I assume that the EBU would have demanded that Bashar change his song in order to take part.

The whole we’re keeping the event non-political by BANNING CERTAIN FLAGS is such insane mental gymnastics.

The Moroccanoil sponsorship was in its last contest under the terms of the 3 year deal agreed from the outset, and had already had its successor for next year onwards announced as Royal Caribbean back in January...

Not sure I want to reopen this but this thread is quite something if genuine:
