People interact on social media and engage with TV events in different ways. There’s an expectation of being able to react in real time, so wherever the winner comes from, I can see more people taking advantage of the ability to vote during the show.

Actually, now that I think about it - there were a couple of entries in the opening section of both of those shows that did pretty well in the televote, weren't there?

In 2010, Azerbaijan placed 5th on televote after performing 1st (and 5th overall), Belgium performed 7th, placed 6th overall but were like 14th in the televote.

2011 was a slightly different story - Bosnia, Ireland, Sweden and Greece all performed within the first 10 songs and all placed in the top 10 on televoting in the final.

Last year we saw the top 2 from semifinal 2 completely flop in the televote in the final (as well as Czechia from SF1 to an extent) so one could argue that the EBU are trying to implement steps to mitigate that. Even though the demographic voting in semifinals is usually slightly different, but anyways!
 
Do we get the auto qualifiers performing in the dress rehearsals today or is just those competing?

With the exception of Gustaph, everyone from SF2 flopped in the final. Several were lucky to get there in the first place.

This change is mainly driven by SVT to increase engagement, as the reference group is typically conservative and hesitant to make changes. Nowadays, the EBU also has more data confirming that viewership and voting tend to be higher for later draws.
