Great spheres, beautiful spheres.

I've now ordered it but I think I'll still hold off on the demo, I want to go in knowing as little as possible.
You may as well play it. It’s the opening of the game and you can continue where you left off once it’s out so you’re not going to be spoiling anything.

I played an hour of the demo, it’s definitely the most engaging FF plot in a while but that’s probably because of the heavy Game of Thrones influence.

I screamed at “you cock” :D the fighting also feels like an improvement on 15. It made me a lot more likely to buy it.

I played the combat extra bit and that seemed fun. It’s definitely a buy for me after being a skeptic.

I decided I can wait until it’s going cheap after reading the Eurogamer review. First mainline Final Fantasy I’ve not got on launch day since VII.

Apparently Matsuno is playing it and enjoying it. And the art director for Vagrant Story is the art director for this.

Have they slipped in a Vagrant sequel by STEALTH? My interest increases TENFOLD if so.

After literally a DECADE of looking and resigning myself that it was lost to the annals of the internet/my memory, the Leona Lewis enthusiastically plays FF clip has finally been resurrected 🙏

I do love that it's specifically FFXIII she's involved with, a game that has quite weird and obtuse systems even for a Japanese RPG of that era. I wonder what her favourite Paradigms were?

What WAS 13 like? I never played it cuz I never bought a console from that generation. I don't think I've heard a single good thing.

I didn't like it much :( I found the battle system weird (it sort of feels like a hybrid of a strategy wargame and traditional FF battles), the characters and world just weren't that charming, and I also resented that thanks to the sequels they spent years longer on the whole thing than they otherwise would have.

I feel like it was alright when I played it. But looking back it was incredibly linear, the battle system was dull, and a lack of exploration, towns or NPC to interact with meant it lacked any character. They also thought Lightning was some kind of super star and she was NOT.
It was pretty though and I enjoyed XIII-2.

Yeah I remember the linearity being the most emphasized criticism. FAIR ENOUGH tbh. By 2009, there was no excuse for a Final Fantasy title to NOT be open world.

From 2007 onwards, it always felt like FF was trying to catch up with the rest of the RPG world. I think Western RPGs started giving everybody a run for their money a bit.

I don’t think FF needs to be open world necessarily (XVI isn’t). But you need to be allowed to do more than press up/forward for 40 hours.

Yeah I dunno, I think FF12 struck the perfect formula of controlled open world. I thought they'd keep that.

The chest nonsense for getting the best weapon was really off-putting. You were actively punished for opening every chest in the game. Unforgivable

Anyway, BACK TO THE TOPIC AT HAND.

I'm really enjoying this. Combat is beginning to click for me properly, story is progressing nicely, and Cid can Olphus me anytime he likes :horny:

Just sat down to play this today. Not far into it, but it's very much a JRPG. Especially the WIGS. Would it kill them to give us characters who aren't permed and pressed?

I've enjoyed what I've played so far, when the combat clicks and you're nailing perfect dodges and parries it really does feel quite special. My main problem is that I still haven't finished Zelda, and having both of them on the go at once is quite anxiety inducing :D

I'm a fair chunk through the game (I'd guess about half way or so?) and it's so much fun.

I have enough abilities now that tearing through trash mobs is really satisfying, but bosses are difficult enough to be fun and make you think about what abilities to use when. I can't wait for a hard mode playthrough.

The other thing I'm really enjoying is how apparent it is that this is made by the same people as XIV. From the story, to the boss fight design and especially the music, it does sometimes feel like a single player version of XIV, turned up to 11.

I'm still quite early in the story I think, but I played for a bit last night and just unlocked limit breaks. The dungeon and boss fight was good fun, but I am starting to feel like the combat is a bit basic and samey when it comes to your regular attacks and spells. Quite a few times I've been in the situation where a boss is staggered, and your eikon abilities are in cooldown so all you can do is mash Square and it feels like you're wasting the stagger opportunity. I'm guessing there will be more stuff unlocked over time, so I'm sure that will help.

ALSO I realise that I've been conditioned by FFVII Remake to think of normal attacks doing negligible/chip damage, which to be fair doesn't seem to be the case in FFXVI.

It's better once you have three Eikons, but there is definitely an element of saving abilities if you are close to staggering them, and also saving your limit break for when they are staggered too. You should choose some abilities for getting stagger down, and then others for unleashing hell once staggered (later Eikons are good for this)

Also, make sure you are using Garuda's unique ability at half stagger, it's beyond useful.

Now that I've finished the game and going through hard mode, combat is much more fun. I got I think two game overs (outside hunts) the entire first playthrough. But got two game overs in the first 'level' with Cid alone on hard.

The soundtrack will be out soon, but in the meantime here's a little teaser EP:

I'm not sure if this is a spoiler, but I'm enjoying how the game seems to be presenting
Clive not being able to transform into Ifrit on command
as an erectile dysfunction metaphor. Maybe I'm reading too much into it :D
