I mean, this discussion was imminent.

Which album do you guys sounds better?

Obviously Gaga had a lot more to live up to, but from a purely musical point of view...what do we think?

Future Nostalgia vs Alice
Don't Start Now vs Stupid Love
Cool vs Rain on Me
Physical vs Free Woman
Levitating vs Fun Tonight
Pretty Please vs 911
Hallucinate vs Plastic Doll
Love Again vs Sour Candy
Break My Heart vs Enigma
Good In Bed vs Replay
Boys Will Be Boys vs Babylon

Not sure what to do with Sine From Above and 1000 Doves.

I love both albums very much but this is Dua's pop landscape. She's the moment! :disco:

Future Nostalgia vs Alice (this is the tightest)

Break My Heart

Good In Bed vs Replay
Boys Will Be Boys vs Babylon

Skewed slightly to Dua, but pretty even overall.

Love Again vs Sour Candy
I'll just have to pretend I didn't read this utter madness. Maybe your brain has been temporarily rewired by the trauma of Bionic? I don't know.

One of these songs in an underbaked little sketch of a label-demanded collab featuring the lyric "so sweet then I get a little angry, yeah yeah yeah yeah" and the other is THE BEST THING ON FUTURE NOSTALGIA

this kind of track vs track thing is odd. i actually prefer Chromatica a whole lot more but APPARENTLY NOT.

Future Nostalgia is one of the best pop albums of the last few years, although the final two tracks are really out of place.

Chromatica was a good concept but the execution was terrible, considering the Dua Lipa album was going for a similar sort of idea. Why was Joanne singing over Swedish House Mafia tracks from 2013 if she wanted to do a Nineties dance record?

I don't really like Don't Start Now. I understand why it was a hit, but it's not a favourite from the album.

Meanwhile, I listened to both albums today, and Chromatica remains the more exhilarating listen. Gaga's grandiose lyricism, innate sense of drama and the feeling of the Chromatican landscape (helped massively by the three cinematic interludes) really keeps the energy up throughout.

Perhaps not the best time to answer this as I’m currently hammering Chromatica.

I do think despite the absolutely sensational highlights on Future Nostalgia (nothing on Chromatica individually comes close to the first two singles), Chromatica is much more enjoyable to listen to as an album.

I guess maybe also the joy of having Gaga back at the top of her pop game is more satisfying than the novelty of Dua Lipa taking Carly Rae’s crown as the thinking gays’ popstar.

I really enjoy Future Nostalgia, but it feels sooo slight compared to Chromatica, especially lyrically. There’s nothing remotely quirky or interesting in Dua’s album at all.

Chromatica is better as a package, whereas i'd say Future Nostalgia has more standout individual songs.

I had to re-listen to "Love Again" to remember what it sounded like. it's nice but "Sour Candy" is the better BOP.

I’m not really getting much from Dua’s voice, her tone is quite boring for me. But she still has some great songs.

FN just feels like a TikTok era version of Kylie’s X - just a Now compilation of stuff that might work

I guess that’s just the never ending disagreement. One person’s variety is another’s messy. One person’s cohesive is another’s one-note. Just depends what your agenda is.

These things never really work, especially as you've edited Chromatica to keep the last song in :D

Gaga has the better experience, Dua the best highs.

It must be said though, thank fuck for Gaga's voice because Dua's monotonous delivery, even though it often works, is a bit much over one album and immediately makes me want to reach for the lung-stretching divas straight after...aka Joanne :disco:

It's true, there's something flat about Dua. I watched the Physical video and she's just not a STAR in the same way that Ms Joanne is.

I mean I love Break Your Heart but it will never cause anyone to become gay in the way that Babylon will.

She's serving charisma for days in the Physical video, what is this?

Once again I don't understand why we have to diminish one woman to praise another. If Dua was lacking star appeal she would not have become the world's new biggest popstar with her second record. She's hardly fucking Zara Larsson is she.

Tbh this whole thread is a bit of a fool’s errand, the only thing in common is WOMEN and GAY HYPERBOLE

Future Nostalgia is 80s influenced cool pop with an eye on the critics and TikTok
Chromatica is 90s influenced dance pop with an eye on getting the gays back onside (and hopefully some post ASIB afterglow)

Totally with Tetris on this one, Chromatica is a fun experience. FN is more experimental with some amazing moments but not always my cup of tea. But I’m 37 so I feel like it’s not really for me anyway so what does it matter?

Dua seems like a decent gal but a bit of a blank canvas at the moment. That’s not always a bad thing of course

apples and rotten oranges. Dua's vocals are grandiose but they are criminally wasted on the most unexciting pop star since Demi Lovato.

my cat has more stage presence.

Dua Lipa is *utterly* devoid of charisma and star quality. I really enjoy her album, but her voice is mediocre and there’s just no character or personality in anything she does.

I wouldn't say she has NO charisma, her thing is more she could be one of your mates, rather than being some GRAND DAME.

She has certainly improved as a performer since the first album, but TBH the awkward dancing was all part of the charm.

i loved her voice on the first album. Genesis, Be The One, Bad Together, Last Dance and New Rules are all phenomenal vocal performances.

If you can't find character on a song like Don't Start Now, Levitating or Love Again... sweetie, I'm so sorry!

those 3 tracks plus Hallucinate and Boys Will Be Boys are my favorite on FN, but the album still pales in comparison to the debut. good lord i just put on Begging and was reminded of how ethereal it is. how was it not a single? but then again 90% of DL could have been (smash) singles.

Dua Lipa is of the greatest female pop debut of the 2010s. @ me.

Once again I don't understand why we have to diminish one woman to praise another.

It isn't diminishing one in order to praise another - this is a thread comparing their albums, which is totally fair, and a by product of that will be comparing the singers. Inevitably that will lead to people bringing up what they don't like about them sometimes. It's perfectly normal to compare two popstars and their work! It's not like some personal attack.

For what it's worth I find Dua has enough of a stage presence personally, the awkwardness was part of the charm and she definitely stands out. Even her voice is distinctively hers, you'd recognize it anywhere - I just find the deliberately flat tone a bit much after numerous songs.

If Dua was lacking star appeal she would not have become the world's new biggest popstar with her second record.

Maybe. But you can't really know that. "Don't Start Now" being incredible surely has more to do with it.
