Happy 60th Birthday Heike Drechsler!

Be honest, do you still go to YouTube, on occasion, to watch Heike’s golden moments?

Some of you might remember her as Heike Daute. Multiple Olympic/World/European Champion. One of the greatest athletes of our time! 🥹 748 BP in long jump the third best in history.

Share your favourite Heike moments. In an interview she herself named the Sydney long jump gold:

She was one of the rare DDR athletes that were clean. She rose to stardom very young winning her first European Championship at only 19! Her final athletics medal was the Sydney gold 17 years later. Her in long jump, 200m and hepthatlon would still be medal worhty today despite the changes in sneakers and surfaces.

Yes I loved Heike and have ended up in a wine hazed YouTube rabbit hole of some of her finest moments in the past. She and Jackie Joyner-Kersee had a very special rivalry. Full on competition but friendly and full of respect.

I don’t think it’s correct to say she was a clean GDR athlete (especially during her power house sprinting phase) but glad she had the opportunity to prove her ability competing for a unified German team and still winning everything major. I do think she and Marita Koch were the two GDR athletes who would have been elite anyway.

Wasn’t she a (forced) Stasi spy on her team mates at one point too? I’ll need to google that now.

Yeah she certainly wasn’t clean :D

Let’s not forget, she originally tried to sue someone who uncovered it, and lost after all her medical and dosage charts were released, and then she admitted it happened when she retired.

But an amazing athlete nonetheless and, let’s face it, it’s not like the Americans she was up against weren’t on the sauce.

She was a Stasi informant supposedly, but that bit seems a bit more cloudy.
