Well SOMEONE HAD TO.

More specifically, I’ve had this ABSOLUTE 13/10 STONE COLD BANGER in my head for the past 24 hours and had to scratch the itch.

HE DON’T PLAY BY RULES

It still disgusts me nearly 25 years on that we didn’t make this a mega hit over here, bombing out outside the top 40, though our American pals made it one of the biggest hits of 1989 and it remains one of her better remembered hits. And as for that ICONIQUE video… :disco:

There’s something about her (lack of) voice that puts me off her songs

Is that the short policeman from Police Academy?

I'M MAKING SURE THE JUDGES CAN SEE EVERY WORD THAT'S COMING OUT OF MY MOUTH

AS IF I WAS COCO MONTRESE HERSELF :disco:

I’ve been FORCED to put her greatest hits on this morning because of this thread. I picked up a new copy in Media Markt in Antwerp for a single Euro a few years ago.

The first 10-12 tracks really are strong. She (they) took the blueprint of Janet and Jody in their poppier moments and matched them at their own game.

I always think whoever wrote and produced ‘Vibeology’ must’ve heard Sam Fox’s ‘Love House’ before putting it together.

Also enjoyed her cameo on Jenna Dewan’s lip sync battle thing.

It always feels like she was a “pop star” forever but really the first 2 albums only spanned a few years and then by the 3rd she was pretty much done. She’s a forever fave of mine though :disco:

Vibeology killed her OFF!

I think the American Idol gig makes you forget how many years she was actually in the wilderness. She’s also never really bothered with new music properly, which is sad. Other than the two AI-era singles. Well, not that I know of anyway…

She didn’t survive a fake plane crash to be treated like this

There's nothing by her I would actively put on.

I MIGHT NOT skip Rush Rush or The Promise Of A New Day.

Other than that, NO. Sorry.

Imagine picking those two above the rest and even thinking the rest deserve a NO.

The only NO around here is Chrissy’s NO FUN ZONE.

Saying it now - Head Over Heels is a better album than Spellbound.
I don’t remember actively disliking anything on it. But what is there to go back to aside from My Love is for Real and to a much lesser extent If I Were Your Girl and Crazy Cool?

So if I had to pop on a Paula album to show me what I'm missing, which one should it be?

Forever Your Girl basically has 7 hits, which is my favourite. But if you know those and not bothered, Spellbound is your choice. Head Over Heels I like, but was maligned at the time.

Seven?! I will give both a listen.

Yes Forever Your Girl is packed with (US) hits. basically a Control or True Blue type situation. The 2 or 3 album tracks are disposable imo. So overall I prefer Spellbound, which is more varied anyway.

i'm going to try and guess which tracks were the 7 singles on Forever Your Girl.

So far, The Way That You Love Me is enjoyable but very much a late release option.

Yeah, the album tracks are fairly disposable but how the fuck does Christian not know the singles?

Cold Hearted is fucking LIFE CHANGING for starters.

The Way That You Love Me was a bomb early single that was reissued and remixed as a huge (US) hit. The remix is better.

Paula and Ofra has always been a favourite.

But yes, Vibeology killed her hits stone cold in its tracks. Despite being fabulous.

I will forever love the contrast between the effortless voxalising from Ofra Haza that opens My Love is For Real, and poor sparrow-lunged Paula when the actual lead vocal kicks in. :D
