I'm going to Milan (1 Viewer)

I don't know, I've never been. YOU BITCH :o

It's not top of my list of places to go. Is this the two day thing with work?

Yes!

I'm a bit annoyed, as I said to let me know before they book, as I might consider staying out there a bit longer if one of you boys wanted to come out there, but they went and booked anyway.

And I'm sharing a room with the boss :gross:

I think Suedehead has been. Or at least he;s a lot more familiar with Northern Italy than me.

Well you know me lolly, as long as I can get a nice fridge magnet I'll be happy!

To do?

Be FASHIONABLE
Eat PIZZA
Go to ART GALLERIES
STRUT

I would imagine. I was there as a child.

Get one of the Duomo

duomo_milano.jpg

It does look AMAZING

it's very INDUSTRIAL

not nearly as GLAMOROUS as it SOUNDS

although there's plenty to do if you look hard enough :disco:

I think I went to the DUOMO

I remember climbing lots of STEPS

There will be lovely food and cultural things... plenty enough for two days.

Isn't it the financial heart of Italy as well?

I don't think it's supposed to be THAT attractive a city outside of the centro storico, is it, but I'm sure you'll find enough to do to fill a few days. Isn't it very easy to get to one of the big lakes from there, as well?

I have been!
All I remember is on the main shopping road I went to tip some guy playing the didgeridoo and he then asked me to hold it while he went to toilet in la rinascente, so i was just left in the street for a good five minutes just holding this didgeridoo

here is a nice building

there is a castle thing and its full of japanese and pickpockets - they try and sell you wristbands and i said i didn't want one, (he was blates after my camera which i had just put away) so he tried to force it on me for free, but i chucked at him and ran.

also NEVER DRIVE in milan, nightmare!!! x

Definitely go to the Duomo, which is gorgeous. La Scala is one of the most famous Opera Theatres in the world - so if you could catch something there, that would be awesome. Make sure you go and see 'The Last Supper' by Da Vinci - I loved that.

Also, you can get to Lake Como - its a short train ride away.

Or if you don't get around to it Star, my mother has it on a lovely set of place mats. Next time you're down I'll take you on a visit.

I've rather LUDICROUSLY booked a ticket to see Dead Can Dance in Milan in October and now have no idea what on EARTH I'm going to do when I get there, let alone where to stay or indeed HOW TO SPEAK ITALIAN

Why the fuck didn't I choose HAMBURG? :wired:

:D JUST AS WELL

As it is, I decided to get a ticket for the Hamburg show as well. I haven't been anywhere since Krakow in 2006 thanks to my soon-to-be-disappearing DISMAL DEBTS so FUCK IT

EURO UP :disco:

Duomo roof tour is worth it if you get a good day
Spend some time at Parco Siempione, and enjoy the music and the people and the castle
Navigli and the Brera are worth going to for nice reataurants/bars/walks
The gay bars are in and around Porta Venezia and there are plenty

Milan is such a great base and if you have time I'd go to one of Lecco or Como for the lake and mountains, or even Bergamo for the Citta Alta. A little further out even for the smaller lake towns.

Enjoy!

LOVE Milano! I would say a top 5 city in Europe.

seconded that the Duomo roof walk in a must, unlike many super touristy activities it's very worth it. incredible views. I think they're doing work on it still, so if you squint you can pretend you're climbing the roof of Sagrada Familia. :disco:

Navigli is the other side of touristy, it's pretty but I'd go there for a daytime walk rather than dinner or a night out. around here is also a lovely shopping area around the street Corso di Porta Ticinese with lots of architectural ruins, I'd really recommend. closer to the centre, a walk in the grounds of the castle and the adjoining park is very pretty if the sun is out.

Porta Romana is a really vibrant neighbourhood with loads of small wine bars spilling into the street. for a real Milanese pizzeria experience try Pizzeria COKE. the pizzas are literally too big for the tables, it's amazing.

nearby is the Fondazione Prada, which is 100% the MUST-SEE CULTURE SPOT of Milano. very chic space over about seven floors with exhibits by Koons etc and a cafe that resembles a real life Wes Anderson.

for a night out I would go to the Chinatown district and Via Paolo Sarpi. there's a wine shop called Cantine Isola that is four walls STACKED with wine bottles, you pick one for the night and they continuously fill your glass. everyone drinks on little stools in the street and gets Asian food nearby, it's so charming.

and finally for excellent Milanese pastries, try Marchesi 1824. there are three near Duomo, I think it's owned by Prada. remember NOT to order a latte or milky coffee after midday. :disco:

Had a lovely couple of days there and put your recommendations to use @Rowan Tree 🌳 and @Jark, thanks again

I absolutely LOVED Fondazione Prada - and it hadn't come up when I'd initially googled 'contemporary art Milan' so I never would have known about it, special thanks for that Jarque xx
