Israel's participation in Eurovision 2024 (1 Viewer)

Do you think they want out at this point, they must know it’s going to be a PR disaster if they compete.

I saw people on the OGAE Facebook group (OF ALL PLACES) suggest that this is arguably a welcome get-out for everyone involved. Aside from the PR disaster, there are also huge safety implications that have to be worrying the EBU, Sweden as hosts and the Israeli delegation themselves.

The EBU is unwilling to ban Israel for other reasons, and the Israelis don’t want the indignity of having to withdraw. This provides a handy way for Israel to bail out of this year without either of those things having to happen.

I really hope they’d withdraw.

There’s already so much talk about how anti-semitic Malmö is and the chaos that will most probably occur if they decide to still go ahead and participate will only just make it even worse, on top of it going to be a security issue. We already have enough polarising shit to deal with in the current political mess we’re in right now.

Some of the alleged lyrics to October Rain:

Evening, everything is black and white
Who was the fool who told you that boys don't cry
Hours upon hours and flowers
Life is not a game for cowards

[in Hebrew]
There's no air left to breathe
There's no space
There's no me from day to day
All are good children, each one of them

The funniest thing KAN could do right now is withdraw Eden Golan and send Netta with three minutes of chicken noise.

KAN have published the lyrics of October Rain.

Writers of the history
Stand with me
Look into my eyes and see
People go away but never say goodbye

Someone stole the moon tonight
Took my light
Everything is black and white
Who's the fool who told you
Boys don't cry

Hours and hours and flowers
Life is no game for the cowards
Why does time go wild
Every day I'm loosing my mind
Holding on in this mysterious ride

Dancing in the storm
We got nothing to hide
Take me home
And leave the world behind
And I promise you that never again
I'm still wet from this october rain
October Rain

Living in a fantasy
Ecstasy
Everything's meant to be
We shall pass but love will never die

Hours and hours and flowers
Life is no game for the cowards
Why does time go wild
Every day I'm loosing my mind
Holding on in this mysterious ride

Dancing in the storm
We got nothing to hide
Take me home
And leave the world behind
And I promise you that never again
I'm still wet from this october rain
October Rain
October Rain

לא נשאר אוויר לנשום
אין מקום
אין אותי מיום ליום
כולם ילדים טובים אחד אחד

(There's no air left to breath
There's no space
I'm gone day by day
Everyone is good kids one by one)

This all feels rather Belarus 2021 at this point. I wonder if they ever really intended to compete this year or not? At this point it seems very likely they'll walk away

The thing is, there is really nothing explicitly political in there at all. No more so than say, Croatia's song last year, and there was never even a question mark over that.

If the EBU are going in the direction of banning this, then I can't help but wonder if some behind the scenes deal has been struck to save face for both parties and we're just witnessing some theatre now.

It's really for the best if they choose not to enter this year. It's just too soon and the last thing in the world this conflict needs - especially in terms of perceptions within Israel of what people would be booing, and among most Jews - is the specific type of polarisation that not much good is likely to come out of at all.

The title plus the first two verses are probably enough justification for the EBU to block it. And they should, for a multitude of reasons including what Penny just said

I can't imagine the EBU will ban this. If they let the lyrics of 1944 and Face the Shadow pass, this surely will to.
In fairness though, Face The Shadow was the amended title after Don’t Deny was vetoed.

Which always felt very pointless as “don’t deny” was still the most prominent/repeated/intelligible part of that song :D

It's a "skit" about Israel maybe being banned from Eurovision, and the lead is clearly meant to be Eden Golan, on Israeli TV

I think it is worth scrutinizing which part of Israeli TV this comes from. The sketch show it is from (which seems to favour a “taking the piss out of all sides” brand of satire) does not air on the national broadcaster so I doubt this can be used in arguments in favour of disqualifying them.

Even if this was on the national broadcaster, I don't think it would be relevant to the decision the EBU have to make. (In the same way Have I Got News For You would have no bearing on the UK Eurovision entry)

I was more sharing it out of being gobsmacked at it's content, and how Israeli participation/disqualification is being portrayed domestically.

The lyrics to both songs are pretty benign if they don't draw attention to the subject matter, so the fact they are literally coming out and stating what they are about goes to show there are other motivations at play here.

Looks like they’ll be sticking around after all…

Why are they even bothering? It's going to be so unpleasant for her, and dare I say not very safe?

Israeli delegation won’t be taking part in anything other than the shows themselves, so I expect they are covered on the security front.

I was half expecting a withdrawal on the basis that the national focus shouldn’t be on a song contest but clearly they have taken the view that it is important to be there.

I also wouldn’t rule out of a half decent performance. The atmosphere in the hall may be tough for her but there’s no negative vote.

She can KEEP IT

Aside from the deep problemacy of Israeli participation, THIS is the only Hurricane I accept in Eurovision

Didn’t we agree that this thread wasn’t going to be used for the question of whether or not Israel should be in Malmo? Would be great if we can keep it that way.

We're never going to make an entirely neat separation of the two. The main thrust of my post was about the song title, so this seems the appropriate thread.
