J. K. Rowling and other TERFs

i'm trying to understand both sides but from what i can see this maya saying - My belief … is that sex is a biological fact, and is immutable. There are two sexes, male and female. Men and boys are male. Women and girls are female. It is impossible to change sex. These were until very recently understood as basic facts of life by almost everyone - i find rowling's line about "forcing women out of their jobs for stating sex is real" rather disingenuous.

i gather this maya refuses to address trans people in accordance with their post-op gender?

She's also a whopping anti-semite.

I had a read at the judgement last night, it is absolutely brutal and it was hard not to laugh at the silly deluded cow who thinks that "freedom of speech" means "I can do whatever I want with no consquences whatsoever".

There's two keys to this.

1. there have been intersex people since time immemorial so "ooh, biology" is just bollocks
2. the phrase "until very recently" is also essentially cobblers not least because they're have been trans people all throughout history and also because it suggests that any thing new to her that she doesn't like has to be wrong and therefore ignored and discarded.

oh, i find the entire statement rubbish. i think all of it is ridiculous, i'm just trying to wrap my head around the arguments and rowling's chagrin.

i also enjoyed her lawyer's statement:

Had our client been successful, she would have established in law protection for people – on any side of this debate – to express their beliefs without fear of being discriminated against.

it sounds to me like it would've done the exact opposite for the trans community.

Rowling is one of those who I wish never to have discovered on Twitter as I used to love all her positive wholesome anti-bullying messages in Harry Potter before she became yet another "famous person who thinks she's the authority on all political matters" (often contrary to her writing) :(

These are the tweets in question (they make it more clear)

"some transgender people have cosmetic surgery but most retain their birth genitals."

wow.

It does seem as if she may be basing her view of transgender people entirely on the ones who do porn.

"some transgender people have cosmetic surgery but most retain their birth genitals."

wow.

This is a cunning sophistry. Such is the relatively primitive nature of phaloplasty surgery compared to a vaginoplasty that most trans men don't have genital surgery. As such, the statement is probably just about true but is designed to make you think that trans women actively keep their penises and will use them.

Nice try.

UGH

I'd already taken against her once she started the Corbyn-bashing so this is confirmation that she is a cunt.

Oh god I can’t stand the woman

What a troll

FFS, why is gender seemingly the subject of 2019?

Was she once married to a trans woman or something? If not then why feel the need to pipe in with an opinion on something that generally doesn’t and shouldn’t affect you?

Then again, I personally have some cynical views towards people claiming to be non binary, which I see as totally different from being transgender (although willing to admit I may be ill informed, influenced by Sam Smith just generally being thick as shit and bad at explaining things on all levels anyway) but why would anyone shout it on a public forum when it doesn’t matter to them either way?

If I didn't already hate those stupid books* and films I would say she's JANCELLED but that's a MOOT POINT as far as I am concerned.

(* I liked the third one.)

Also see Lena Denham and others of the ilk. They make it all up as they go along and pass it off as 'science'.

Speaking of others of the ilk, Glinner has updated his bio to "Proud Hufflepuff"

More like bloody Slytherin

Despite my academic background and continuing academic pursuits, I read that tweet and this topic and don't know what to think. The world is so desperate to catch people out on the smallest thing and create a cancellation it's hard to know sometimes what I'm agreeing or disagreeing with.

I'm at the point when I could not agree more with the "you do you hun" sentiment. Also fuck hate.

The "sex is real" thing is a pretty blatant dogwhistle, she's firmly nailing her colours to the mast here.

Imagine having such an enormous platform that you could use to really make a positive difference, then instead using it to defend people who are trying to shit all over one of the most marginalised groups in society. It's fucking sociopathic.

Pretty much. Being "woke" is totally the flavor of the month at the moment. And on social media it super easy to fake and make up as you go along.

Being woke is fine if it's for the greater good. I feel like anyone could be ready to accuse anyone at any point for the most nuanced differences.

Having said all that apparently this isn't JK's first rodeo in TERFdom, which saddens me and I couldn't give a fuck about Harry Potter.

I notice she's been very quiet on Twitter for the last 6 months and this is one of her few tweets. Oh JK. You cunt.

When I worked at a university one of my colleagues had to lock her (anonymous) account because JK Rowling had liked one of her dreadful, transphobic tweets. I regret not leaking the story to the press to this day, but the Sun and the Mail probably wouldn't want it, and the Guardian would have given her a column.

it all feels very "they took are jobs".

i can't say i have any time for people who use gender (issues) as a means of finding attention but to refuse to acknowlede that someone identifies with this or that gender is at the very least stupid.

sidebar: are women under threat of being made irrelevant by trans women in any way shape or form?

i know there's an argument to be made in the field of sports, but i don't really know enough about it to have an opinion.

Who knows, but I think that accusation comes from the hook nosed goblin bankers in HP

Yes, it was pointed out multiple times that this appeared anti-semitic but, of course, Twitter wasn't in full flow in them days.

No. The existing rules are very strict and work just fine.

Mumsnet are of course creaming their Boden knickers right now

Imagine wasting £80000 on trying to have your prejudice enshrined in law. Daft arsepieces. Fundamentally, very clever of the judge to spot that it was a slippery slope - every bigot thinks their prejudice is "common sense" and the court went "lol no bye".

"JK Rowling and the Real Sex Registration Office" OUT SOON.

But honestly, yuck. Stupid cow.

?

No offence intended, I was just mindlessly parroting a Reddit comment I'd just read TBH

Darn, have I earned someone's ignore list already :( Teach me not to think before commenting.

There are issues raised about how she portrayed the bankers as hook nosed goblins in HP
