Kander & Ebb adaptation of the 1987 South American political prisoner drama which was a minor Broadway hit in the 90s.

The big number:

Directed by Bill Condon (Chicago, Dreamgirls, er, Beauty & The Beast) and starring (in a supporting role) J-Lo.

It hasn't got a distributor yet, but it's showing at Sundance in two weeks time, so we'll know if it's any good shortly after that.

I don't like the show at all, but maybe Bill Condon can find some cinematic magic.

According to the Sundance press release:

"Jennifer Lopez is an astonishing scene-stealer in a career highlight performance as Luna/Aurora, with show-stopping musical numbers that underscore the exuberant prowess of her dancing and voice"

I'm certainly looking forward to her showing off the exuberant prowess of her voice with this number. Chita could never!

I wouldn’t be totally against them just letting Vanessa Williams dub her…

But for real, Chicago is probably the best movie musical of the last HOWEVER MANY years so if it's more of that I'm very here for it.

The Sundance reviews are pretty stellar! it hasn't got a distributor yet, but if a studio good at Oscar campaigns picks it up, it could be very good news for J Lo.

It's not a very good show to begin with, and definitely one of the lesser Kander & Ebb shows. Another Cabaret or Chicago it definitely is not.

If they axe all the songs between the prisoners and focus on the film-within-a-film fantasy sequences with the Spiderwoman, they might be onto something.

It could just as easily be another Nine though :zombie:

I have been OBSESSED with that song since you posted it Christian. Thank you, musical theatre gay elder 🙏

I saw Chita perform it in the 90s London production and it's the thing I remember best about it

It was a LONG WAIT to get to it though :D

I read a review in The Guardian earlier on which ended with something along the lines of “it’s alright, but Lopez is undeniable”.

I thought this was something from Marvel Phase 6 and I was SO confused.

Can she not tap up whoever released her last masterpiece?

The rumoured budget is now a lot lower than was being touted at Sundance ($30m versus $60m), but that might be an attempt to secure a distributor. It does seem a bit low for a film with honking song and dance spectaculars plus J Lo's presumed fee, but maybe she did it for scale.

Harpic Records needs a film subsidiary.

I wouldn't fancy bankrolling J Lo's Oscar campaign though...

What now? Do they just keep dropping the price until SOMEONE takes it?

I guess it's not great for her Oscar hopes if it ends up on Paramount Plus :(

Do we have any Moopy funds going spare yet?

Even the Robbie Williams monkey movie didn't have to go through this indignity.

Robbie played by a CGI monkey > J-Lo played by a CGI spider
