Oh I do love it, especially the Humpty mix. She also sounds heavenly on it.

I forgot how big it was WW, she should really dust it off for a tour, the whole arena (theatre?) would sing along.

I think the original is practically unlistenable too, so there's that. :D

LOVE IT.

God I was obsessed with it at the time. I remember spending an entire DAY playing Resident Evil 3 and listening to this on repeat.

For all that it's obviously fairly reductive, I quite like it too. The production is really nice and it's one of her more pleasant vocal performances of this century.

It's... okay.

I hate the original anyway so as a Madonna stan her version was always going to be an improvement for me on that 'real music' slab of nonsense.

It’s a song I feel like I should dislike in all forms but I do enjoy the original and Madonna’s cover is excellent.

Where is this in her best-sellers list?

For something that she’s successfully managed to COMPLETELY BURY from public consciousness, it was a pretty massive hit wasn’t it?

Well it's not like she didn't have FORM in that area, is it?

She could have easily have released Time Stood Still and it would have probably done fairly well in that short gap of late spring/early summer of Y2K before Music.

I love that of her top 20 best sellers American Pie, True Blue, Who’s That Girl? and Beautiful Stranger have all been somewhat BANISHED since their release.

I’m amazed True Blue is her tenth biggest seller, it’s hardly one that has remained with the casual crowd.

Presumably by the time American Pie had dropped off the charts, The Next Best Thing had already been banished to obscurity. :D

Considering how uncommerical Drowned World was, it still did well both charts- and airplay wise. Time Stood Still would have walked it.

As much as I love 'Time Stood Still' I think it would have come across as a 'Power of Goodbye' sequel and by then she'd moved on to Mirwais/Music, so in that sense I prefer that it ended up as more of a hidden gem / deep cut in her catalogue that one needs to actively seek to find.

I am not a desert person, but could she and Mercy bring this back as Blackforest Pie? I wouldn't put it against #mymanangerguyoseary

I think 'Beautiful Stranger' has been treated well out of that list. It was performed live on the Drowned World Tour and it was included on both GHV2 and Celebration. She seems to have come round to 'Who's That Girl' and 'True Blue' as well.

'American Pie' she has always hated - I remember a fabulously cunty interview with Jo Wiley for GHV2 when she was asked about it and she just went 'Well I only recorded it because my arm was twisted into doing it.'

Oh I beg to differ. Yes it was excluded from The Immaculate Collection but I hear it more often on the radio than many other classics and it got a rapturous response when she performed it live on the Rebel Heart Tour in London and NY. The general public/casual Madonna fan contingent love 'True Blue'..

Much better than any of her output from the last 10 years, or maybe even more.

I know she hasn't made it easy for herself but there are plenty of songs much better than 'American Life' on Madame X and Rebel Heart. MDNA I'd have a harder time defending...

I think American Life is probably a lot easier to listen to. But I wouldn't necessarily say better than.

It's the vocals init. Objectively, some of the songwriting and production on Madame X is up there with some of her best work but the vocals sometimes make it difficult for me to enjoy those songs as much as I would like to. Rebel Heart was a bit better in that regard (although I can't even bring myself to listen to the whole album these days) - I'd say 'Joan of Arc' and 'Ghosttown' are (near) top tier Madonna for me.

True Blue is not a fave of mine but it is one of her best known songs I’d argue with the general public above the age of 35. It’s Big Jenny from work’s go to karaoke song.

Interesting - I don’t think I’ve ever heard True Blue in public aside from at the Rebel Heart tour and YEARS AGO when VH1 Classic used to play the iconic cheapo video ALL THE TIME :D

Truly one that has passed me by.

"Joan of Arc" falls completely flat for me as soon as that cheap karaoke chorus kicks in.

But William Orbit's production on "American Pie" isn't perfect either, it's a little bit limp but it's definitely among the best vocals of her studio career. :disco:

I liked it a lot at the time but when I played it just a few weeks ago, I realised it really wasn’t all that and has aged terribly.

The original is fantastic, though.

Her voice flows like ribbon on this. I sort of ruefully listen to it as she was so perfect at this point.

I'll echo the statement that Time Stood Still stood a chance of being another hit due in part to the unthinkably high good will towards her. I don't think Madge would ever admit to having a happiest point in her life, even purely in career terms, but surely this must have been it.

Back to Pie, I just think vocally it shows - the wistful abandon of singing a classic brought something to the surface we probably hadn't heard in her since Holiday.

I actually forgot the one thing I wanted to say about this song as I logged in especially :D

Yes, I remember she was at an award ceremony and a journalist outside asked if Time Stood Still reflected the direction she was going in and she just said "No. *blank stare*"

She did an interview around the MDNA area where she said the Ray of Light era was the happiest of her life - so pretty much!

I love the video for this, she looks fucking ICONIC and she was doing DI-VER-SI-TY before it was a buzzword so I can pretend I didn't see those ham-fisted Instagram posts where David cures racism by dancing to They Don't Care About Us.
