Absolute tepid nonsense to these ears. I know it was a tribute to PHOE CHI but it really does sound like something that PHOE had written herself at 3 years old.

AWFUL song in every way, not to mention it killed her career instantly, who the fuk wants a song 4 Baby Mel? They didn't even want urban Mel, less so MUMSY Mel Beh. I would die to see the execs faces in the office when this was decided as a single over the rest of the album (Mind you, the album was absolute dog shit). I'll never get over the fact this was released over Hotter or Pack Your Shit :disco:

Poor Mel's career must have been the most frustrating one; Victoria we all know was going through the motions and everything about her screamed contractual obligation and the minute she got out of it she escaped, but at least Scary showed some passion and ambition in the business. Her debut album collabs sound like a fever dream for any millennial music fan: Teddy Riley, Sisqo, Missy Elliott, Timbaland, Jam & Lewis, Darkchild, they mustn't have come cheap back then, and were getting mid returns.
At least she found her niche doing Reality TV so good for her.

TERRIBLE

It's such a baffling choice for a MEL BEH single. Who did she think she was kidding with this Mothercare routine? Was this is a deliberate attempt to disassociate from "Scary Spice" by out-tweeing Bunton?

I do love the consistent rewriting that Victoria never was interested when she was probably the most DESPERATE FOR A HIT OF THE LOT :D

I know we don’t technically do -1 anymore because we’re woke and all that but sometimes
Just sometimes
I miss the old us.

Someone pls find that hilarious clip where she thinks she’s beating Kylie in the mids and she goes on about how CGYOOMH is actually not a very good song
While reeling out her husband to sign CD singles

I don’t know what it is about the Spice Girls that always brings out the old Dotmusic bitch in me

I really like Mel B's voice on a ballad. She has very limited range, but she sounds good on record. That being said, this song is very basic.

There was something sad about the Spice careers in the 2000-03 period. The odd flash of brilliance (What Took You So Long, Let Your Head Go) could remind you of what they had been, but the whole thing just felt like a busted sofa.

Mel B's solo career definitely feels like the biggest missed opportunity. Distinctive voice, big personality, but there was just no consistency and after Word Up flopped it felt like nobody had a clue what to do with her.

Her own personal struggles undoubtedly played a part too of course.

Anyway this song is bad. There wasn't much to recommend on the Hot album, but the title(ish) track would have been a better single.

A mellifluous delight, on a par with 'Mother Stands for Comfort' as one of the all-time great musical outpourings of maternal devotion by an English lass. Ms. Brown's talents and ecleticism knew no bounds; truly the UK's regnant URBAN QUEEN that never was of the era!

On the plus side, I have definitely fully come around to LET ME HIT THIS ONE BEFORE I GERRRRHHHH being the very best Solo Spice outing

Why, yes, during OOYM, she was taking David everywhere she turned up to sign CD singles, but that was when she was competing with SEB; I don't remember her doing the same for Innocent Girl, but I wouldn't put it past her.

Like Shee says, she was in a different mindset back then, desperate for a hit (and weren't they all??). In hindsight, everything was different levels of "will this do?" to get good PR and a nice headline. In the end, I think it worked out well for everyone involved. At least Melanie seems to be the only one convincingly releasing listenable music, and it only took her about 10 years to do so.

omg welcome back 2000s Sheena!

you can never be more desperate than Geru circa 2004 mind.

I mean, outside of I Want You Back there is nothing I ever go back to as far as this solo Spice is concerned.

I thought she was onto something when she came out with I Want You Back and Tell Me. I was fooled into buying the album as a result and it was just kinda thrown together in a “that’ll do” kind of way. Disappointing.

Same but add in When You're Gone, Mi chico Latino, What took you so long? at a stretch. I would stream Let your head go too if that stuck-up bitch wasn't blocking the upload.

Beb, I was only talking about Mel Beh there.

No love for FEELS SO GOOD? Sounds very dated now but I was always very fond of it at the time and she looks HOT in the video.

I quite like Today from LA State of Mind in a background music sunny Sunday morning kind of way. :su2:

I've always liked Lullaby. It's sickly sweet but the tune is lovely.

Tell Me my favourite though. Chronically of its time, but still an absolute riot. I love it. It must have cost an absolute BOMB to produce, make a video for and promote :disco:

I actually quite liked Today at the time, because at the time I liked anything that sounded like Gabrielle or the Lighthouse Family.

Now I only like 90% of that stuff, and realise that Today was a disgustingly inappropriate choice for Mel Beh, who should have been given songs about moisture and fingers to sing instead.

I'm so relieved pop music songwriting has improved HEAPS since the faraway days of Solo Spice efforts. It must be very rare for a group to "break up" and all members get a solo deal, when was the last time that happened? One Direction or some K-pop band that I'm not aware of? It must have cost a pretty penny back then to keep all the girls afloat when none of them were raking it; I would guess that 1D's initial deals must have been dirt cheap but worked so well, especially Harry's, that they must be worth millions by now.

My biggest issue with the girls is that they were overworked, exhausted, sick of each other, and didn't want anything to do with the band anymore but to big up their egos when they were all clearly mid at best was foolish on Virgin's end mixed with some of the most stupid and baffling choices led by their irrational logic, case in point releasing Lullaby as a third(!) single by the time the album wasn't even charting anymore and you were on the brink of being dropped but omg you just had your baby and you want everyone to know about it.

Absolute garbage. I Want You Back was so good and it still sounds quite fresh compared to the other singles that sound so dated.

Little Mix seem to have all gone on to solo deals too. Clearly record companies still have money to burn…

Something tells me though that back in the noughties the girls got huge deals It wouldn't be fair to compare them with LM. Besides back then they all had very ambitious and demanding promo schedules, and the fact there were so many TV shows to do this helped a lot. Nowadays what's left? I posted an interview with Perrie from LM where she talks about that, it does her head in that promo nowadays stands for "create more content for your socials" and she doesn't like TikTok and wants to actually perform her music.
