I'll be honest, folks. Like the once glittering divas of Melfest's mid-00s golden era, I'm pretty much a spent force as regards these write-ups. So apologies for the lack of comedy fan fiction, but hopefully the songs will make up for it.

Melodi #1: Albin Johnsén feat. Pa - Upp i luften
Mattias Andréasson, Christoffer Balazik, Fernand MP, Albin Johnsén, Pa Modo
ALBIN-JOHNSEN_SVT_Janne_Danielsson_2020-988x659-1.jpg

You almost certainly don't remember Albin from his 2020 solo Melfest debut Livet börjar nu, in which a truly noxtacular performance saw him limping out in last place with a rather mortifying run of 1's across the board. He's still best remembered for his huge 2014 hit Din Soldat with Krisin Amparo. Opening the whole show is quite a gig for a borderline one hit wonder ten years removed from the hit, but the initial reviews suggest that this is a Samir & Viktor style party number that should get the crowd going. Well, to the extent that it's ever possible to get a Swedish crowd going. *impassively waves balloon*

Melodi #2: Maja Ivarsson - Kamikaze Life
Joy Deb, Linnea Deb, Maja Ivarsson, Andreas "Giri" Lindbergh, Jimmy "Joker" Thörnfeldt
Maja-Ivarsson-scaled.jpeg

Former lead singer of Google-proof indie-pop outfit The Sounds, Maja Ivarsson has a solid songwriting team behind her, but this placement suggests she's probably just here to add a little salt to the Melfest smörgås. Reviews are positive though, apparently a big singalong chorus with a big dollop of Kim Wilde's Kids in America. Should be fun!

Melodi #3: John Lundvik - Voice of the Silent
Jimmy Jansson, John Lundvik, Peter Boström, Thomas G:son

You all know this one. John 'face crack' Lundvik was last seen in 2022 with the extremely boring Anglavakt. It seems he's only released two singles since then, and one of those was a Christmas duet, so it's probably no surprise to see him dipping back into the well for a fourth go-around. He's back in English and collaborating with the Boström/G:Son dream team, which suggests he's aiming to be more competitive this time too. Initial reviews compare this to Anders Bagge's Bigger Than Us mixed with something from The Greatest Showman.

Melodi #4: Meira Omar - Hush Hush
Laurell Barker, Dino Medanhodzic, Meira Omar, Anderz Wrethov

Best known to Swedish audiences as a participant on the creepy reality TV franchise Love is Blind, Meira Omar makes her Melfest debut with this week's welcome and obligatory basic Eurobanger. :disco: Comparisons to Greek and Cypriot entries from the past two decades abound, this should be fun for Moopy and hopefully at least Andra chansen-worthy, though she'll be up against it to pass the better known names in the heat.

Melodi #5: Adrian Macéus - Vår första gång
Adrian Björklund, Adam "Rymdpojken" Englund, Hugo Geijer Persson, Adrian Macéus, William Pärlenskog
Adrian-Maceus.jpg

The baby of this heat and in fact the only performer under the age of 30, Adrian Macéus already has a packed CV including starring roles in popular Swedish kids TV shows and a whole raft of singles, though no major hits to speak of yet. The runway would seem to be clear for a THEOZ style breakout here, but the reviews suggest this is a fairly undercooked ballad that seems likely to drift under the radar.

Melodi #6: Linnea Henriksson - Den känslan
Sebastian Atas, Linnea Henriksson, David Lindgren Zacharias

One of the bigger household names to be tempted into this year's lineup, Linnea Henriksson is one of the most played artists on Swedish radio and actually hosted Melfest in 2020. Her entry this year is being described as a very wordy 60s-inspired toe tapper with a hint of 80s Orup. On name and professionalism alone, this would really be a shock to see outside the top 2 on the votes.

Ever our annual guiding light and compere :disco: And we all know the comedy fan fic will be out in STELLAR FORCE by the time we have heats with real stars in them (like Andreas Lundstedt, or Dolly Style)

I have high hopes for half this heat (particularly Meira Omar, although mostly because I keep imagining it as a cross between Jai Ho and Hush Hush), and an intangible sense of certainty that I will either loathe John Lundvik's one with the fire of a thousand suns, or love it to an extent that feels slightly shameful - no in between

Also I realise I should be thankful that we now live in a more culturally civilised era where this is actually the standard outcome for most of these entries, but they have got to stop clogging up the running order each year with flaccid boys with emotions ballads that feel like they exist for the sole purpose of finishing sixth.

1. Albin and Pa - Very much my cup of tea, although I feel like Panetoz and Medina both passed on it before we ended up with this ALL-STAR DUO
2.Maja Ivarsson - This is FUN :disco: I'll not get attached because it won't be heard from again, mind.
3. John Lundvik - What a unique gift, to be able to take any song and make it so unfathomably boring that it needs an obvious and hurried remix which still sounds pallid and lifeless because you've been so wildly successful in making it just that boring that no amount of donk would ever be able to reanimate its carcass. I look forward to this skirting dangerously close to the win because Sweden learnt nothing from Bigger Than The Universe.
4. Meira Omar - The OBVIOUS highlight that deserves to sail through to the finalen. Yes, that's the souk you're catching a whiff of. BOOM BOOM CHIKICHIKICHIKI :disco:.
5. Generic guitar child - lol fuck you
6. Linnea Henriksson - This is... odd. I can't imagine this being in any way competitive at all - isn't she supposed to be a star attraction this week and she's sent this fluff?

1. Albin and Pa - this was a lot at 6am when I clicked play but I think it will be a fun4sweden opener - surprised at the prediction it would qualify in any form though
2.Maja Ivarsson - This is a quality track that swallows the spirit of Kim Wilde and just has fun with it. Would play this whilst walking away from a crime.
3. John Lundvik - love the 80s vibe and songs like this embody the spirit of Eurovision for me. He says he wants to recreate the disastrous split-screen moment but this time with a happy ending. :ken:
4. Meira Omar - I am lying on the floor. This embodies the OTHER spirit of Eurovision for me - being gay with a spirit + mixer drink
5. Generic guitar child - very generous of the organisers to allow the audience recovery time after that trio of bangers. This is fun4spotify Sweden but I never need it again.
6. Linnea Henriksson - this sounds more like it was made for the radio than a tv show - the performance concept will be crucial. I need to hear the whole thing.

An eclectic mix of songs - in just one week Melodifestivalen towers over every other national final

I think it sounds like a pretty good heat. Definitely better than heat 1 has tended to be the last couple of years, where it's started to seem like the organisers were doing it on purpose to start with the worst heat and have each one after be better before ending with the best.

Also - and I realise I may be alone in this - but does Meira Omar remind anyone else of Michael Jackson - They Don’t Care About Us ? :D

Sorry everyone , but it’s an act of karma because Penelope ruined Statements for me by saying that he hears “there’s no DLR today” in the song’s dramatic climax, and I have to actively unhear it every time I settle down to relax with my Statements playlist

I don't see why, it only adds to the song for me.

Every lyric in the "Voice of the silent" snippet sounds awfully clunky, yet according to Google the worst comes at the very beginning as the first sentence appears to be "Take a breath and breathe" :D

"Hush Hush" sounds the best and I can't wait for Meira's undoubtedly glorious live vocals!
And I fear the child ballad stands out amidst all the uptempo numbers...

Maja may not be deserving of the death slot after all.

Linnea looking like a FIASKO in the making however.

Switch John Lundvik around with Meira and I'd be very happy with that as a result based on first impressions of the studio versions.

Who would’ve thought we’d get such an arresting whiff of the SOUK from Sweden this evening?

If I have understood the vibes correctly (because I certainly don't understand the language), Hush Hush just won the low budget pre-show vote amongst the three guests

:disco:
