Totally get it.

Dare I use the 'I' word, but... I've found that some runner influencers have been very informative and helpful with their shoe review videos on YouTube. Particularly Kofuzi.
Ben Parkes is also great for training in general - I met him & Sarah at the London Marathon expo a couple of weeks ago and I fangirled a bit!
 
45 for a 10k is amazing! Well done!

I’m running my first (and possibly only) marathon in September. I’m quite anxious about it. I’ve done 3 sub-2 hour halves. But the thought of a full fills me with fear.
Any tips on building up to it?

Fantastic! Which one are you doing? You're well set up having done several sub-2 hour half marathons. You could go for a sub4:00 marathon :disco:

I would definitely recommend (if you can) following a proper marathon training plan (they're usually 16-week blocks). That's what I did for my first marathon. If you can't follow the plan 100% that's fine, just make sure you prioritise the long runs and make sure you have at least one run where you've gone up to 20 miles.



I'm thinking of doing another marathon this year in October - not sure which one yet though. Maybe Abingdon or Chester. Or perhaps Yorkshire.

I'm looking at a half-marathon in autumn (October).

I need to figure out how to slot it into my summer, tennis and gym though, so I'm not completely wiped all the time :D

I'm just getting back into running. I've had about two months off with a cough I just couldn't shift and I'm free on Saturday mornings for parkruns again. Would like to try and get to me doing a sub-30 5k again but it's difficult. A few things like age, and small fatherhood weight gain creeping up on me, but I'm determined to just keep at it.

I'm back from doing probably my worst 5k evaahhh which left me feeling more bummed than motivated, but that's just a mental thing I need to get over. At least I'm recognising that I suppose?
 
You've gone for a run and that's all that matters. Tomorrow or the day after's run won't be as painful. One day at a time.

Shoe rotation sounds complicated but it's not really. It's always good to have more than just one pair of shoes but you don't need to have a whole lot and it depends on how many miles you're putting in them. Most would say 1-2 pairs for beginners (a daily trainer and perhaps a 'race' pair) but for more advanced (and I only mean that in the sense of how many miles go in per week, if races are planned etc.) then you would be looking at maybe 3-4 pairs (daily trainers; race shoes; easy/recovery shoes and/or speed session shoes) but really it's all about having a good pair of comfy trainers to begin with.

That being said I think my current rotation is probably 6 pairs :D

My shoes aren't that old and it's not like I've been running super frequently since buying them (depending on the month really). But I need new ones. Going to do a proper gait analysis this time.

Ignore this if it’s not wanted, but I looked at your Strava and I think you’re starting off too fast. If you start a lot slower and do that a couple times, you’ll be back under 30 in the 5k soon

Thank you, this could be true. My route is downhill then back up which I like because I don't want to knacker myself too early, but I've been thinking about reversing it.

You could always alternate directions? Keeps it more fresh too. It’s harder when getting back into it of course, but tiring yourself out every run makes it hard to improve much

It's actually VapoFly3 and not AlphaFly3 the I have but I really want the Alphas which is why I probably posted that :D

Novablasts seem to divide opinion but I absolutely ADORED the Novablast 3 so I'm definitely a convert. If you like ASICS but not Novablast, then you can check out the Superblast and MetaSpeed Sky (both are a bit pricey.)

I'm late to the Saucony game but I would also suggest Endorphin 4 elite - I think they're doing really cool stuff at the moment.

I know Brooks Hyperion gets a lot of positive reviews from the influencers etc. but I have never been a Brooks fan. They're just so dull.
 
I've had a very exercise heavy month and am happy about it, but haven't managed to do anything today and am beating myself up over it, even though rest days are perfectly reasonable.

They aren't just reasonable, they are necessary. :disco: Sit out today and tomorrow and go at it again on Monday. Plus you'll notice the "rest" bump in performance as the the fatigue that's built up will be gone.
 
Absolutely. Rest days are a necessity, but I do empathise with how you're feeling. I think one of the worst habits we've fallen into societally is that if you don't do something, it has to be because you're doing something else instead, and we, therefore, have to justify - to ourselves, mostly - why we're just stopping for a moment. The way I've gotten around it is to plan when, how and why my rest days fit into the week. I try not to have them ad-hoc for the very reason that they then invariably end up feeling like a 'failure', rather than a normal part of an active lifestyle.
 
Oh definitely agree with you both. I give myself one full rest day a week.
Then it’s a run or weights every other day.
That rest day is bliss and absolutely required. Never feel bad about it.

Futile as it might sound but plan your week re: what you can realistically do in terms of sports without running yourself into the ground, make things part of the process and manage your own expectations. It really helps.

I think you’re more likely to lose momentum if you try to do something every day, even on days you really don’t think you should
 
I appear to have finally got the asthma under control. First full 5km since February and much better time. Hoping to get back to twice a week and the sort of times I was getting last Spring and Summer !

Well done! First run back is always the toughest.

Meanwhile, I think I will be looking for new running shoes in July. Couple of more runs with my current adidas but then I probably need something for the slower, longer runs. 👟

Not 100% sure yet, to be fair. I'm not a shoe EXPERT :disco:

But basically, I'm thinking of one pair for longer, slower runs (I might stick with my Adidas supernova for a little longer here) and one pair for runs including some tempo. So I'm probably looking for something that fits the second category.

I need to do more zone two running if I want to do 2 longer distance runs later in autumn, even if it's more challenging to maintain a slow run over 40 minutes than to go all out over 40 minutes - at least mentally. To be fair, I also do quite a few other sports that sit in Zone 2 (hiking to a lesser degree, tennis, swimming, biking).
 
I'm settling into three runs per week quite nicely now but I also don't think I can or want to commit to more between tennis and some biking and swimming.

One slow 10km, one mid-pace (but still being able to talk properly) with my colleagues of 7km during work and 5-6 km tempo/tempo work.

Thats an incredible time - well done!

I did the Porthcawl 10k yesterday. My time was 56.25. I'm pretty pleased, given I've been suffering with a bad lower back; the change in posture has added 30 - 40 seconds to my parkrun time the last few weeks. I think it was a new route and some of the logistics were a bit off. There was one water station just after the 4km mark, which I guess was the most practical place to put it, but by 9km, some people were visibly struggling with the heat more so than usual for this time of year and a few people had collapsed.
 
I've done a first trail run today. To be fair the last 6km are pretty flat but the first 9 are very up and down, getting this done in well under 2h was nice (though I started on the cautious side) - and suddenly a half marathon doesn't seem like such an outlandish idea anymore. :basil:

If you can do that, you can 100% do a half marathon!

To be fair, I felt my legs on the last 2km but that's probably the price I pay for the uphills, downhills and uneven terrain, which is something my body is used to in hiking but not running; plus this was after 4 days of back to back to back biking, tennis, swimming and gym, so the overall shape is probably quite ok now. :disco:

Tomorrow it's time to rest though.
