Moopy's Top 50 ABBA Songs - FULL RESULTS ON PAGE 14

What did @dUb rank highly in this again?
If I remember correctly from the podcast, Lay All Your Love On Me is actually one of @dUb's top five ABBA songs, so if he'd just been a teensy bit more generous then it could have had a perfect ten score. Absolutely nothing untoward about his scoring though - his average just skewed lower than most other voters, which is totally fair for someone who isn't an ABBA "fan" as such.

I often read possibly exaggerated stories of how 1980s gay clubs kept the ABBA dream alive, playing in particular this mix of Lay All Your Love On Me.

It has the stalkery obsessive nature that CGYOOMH did so well 20 years later. The disco synth is beyond compare.

one of the all-time GREAT SONGS. a religious experience. that chorus is truly a hymn.

I think I said it recently but the brief instrumental break going into the third verse with the ethereal synthesizer is such a perfect moment of pop music. extremely evocative. I just love it SO MUCH!

thanks @Pingu kween! this whole countdown was pretty iconic babes!

Lay All Your Love On Me came exceptionally close to getting my 11 (a down to the wire fight between When All Is Said And Done, Under Attack, Should I Laugh Or Cry and this). Sublime disco melodrama - the choral effect on the chorus is just fantastic. It feels like the world is possibly about to end, which is EXACTLY what being that horny on the dancefloor at 2am feels like when it's a piercingly open question whether they're going to go home with you at the end. Full marks 😍

Thanks for being so lovely but seriously, I was dying to do this, so thank you so much everyone for actually spending time with me in the sync listens and in the results thread and most importantly actually taking the time to vote which allowed me to do this in the first place, because I appreciate it wasn't a small ask!

I'm just writing up the full list (which I'll post tomorrow), but in the process I've realised that I need to correct an earlier statistic.

Intermezzo No. 1 was not the lowest-placed song to receive a 10 from somebody. That "honour" in fact goes to I Have A Dream at #85 which received a 10 from children's choir aficionado @Jark.

I’ve got a request @Pingu!

Could we get the top 6 or 11 after correcting for ZenGiraffers by removing the lowest three scores of each act?

It would be interesting to see how big of a difference the outliers are causing!

I'm going to very politely decline this particular request as I don't want to get into "what if this or that had been different" kind of speculation, particularly when it comes to fiddling around with the rates of people who voted in good faith and just so happened to base their scores lower than others.

So I won't post a whole list, but I will say that perhaps unsurprisingly, Dancing Queen would have been the biggest beneficiary of this.

Perhaps it's because I've seen so many fan lists that I appreciated the variety, but I think we had a good selection of voters, from loons through to outliers and everything in between. And the number of voters was such that those outlier scores had impact without skewing it too much.

@Pingu STUNNING thread :disco: thanks for all the hard work that clearly went into it.

Abba are such that the top 50 could have been in any order (more or less) and I'd have nodded and agreed with it. That said, WHAT a top 5 (and no. 11) :sneaky:

:basil: they made Dancing Queen go from 3rd or 4th to 11th place for fucks sake. Made most of the ballads place 5-20 places lower.

There’s a difference between loons and outliers. Loons are very much welcome but outliers should be corrected for, all of us has been an outlier at least once this voting.

It's a vote for all of moopy. I guess I just don't see the problem.

My point was that it'll still be Moopy's top 50 ABBA songs and I just wanted it for reference, not as the official results. ZenGiraffe's votes are still included as he's not an outlier in all of them.

Removing outliers is more about removing random mishaps like accidentally not listening to a song before rating. Or missing the best part of a song because the recap didn't include it. It's fully up to Pingu to decide what he wants to do though.

This is the last thing I'll say on it, but the problem is that there isn't really a neat way to do that. Some people voted totally rationally and broadly in line with the rest of the group, but they tended to give one or two points less on average across the board. Their scores would be classed as "outliers" and taken out for most songs if we did that, which isn't really fair at all.

I think it's a tremendous list and that top 10 is fucking packed. No need for alternative lists. Obviously there are several I think are too high or low, but I am one voter. Any jibes, should and I hope were not taken seriously. I'm just very dedicated to the ABBA back catalogue.

In no particular order

Lay All Your Love On Me
Gimme Gimme Gimme
The Day Before You Came
The Winner Takes It All
Knowing Me Knowing You
Oh, and obviously it was SO hard not to say anything at this point, but excellent work @Ag

Honourable mentions to @Devil who also predicted that If It Wasn't For The Nights would be the highest album track and that Dancing Queen would be marked down.

That was quite a gag. I was pretty sure about them all except KMKY, which I suggested for the reasons I've already mentioned.
