Armenia

Flag-Armenia.jpg

Azerbaijan was a popular round last week, so let's see how their MORTAL ENEMIES stack up. Armenia were first to join the Contest, going top ten out of the gate in 2006. For a time they looked like winners in waiting, but their fortunes have faded quite a bit of late. Still always ones to keep an eye on, though.

Such is the depth of their rivalry with Azerbaijan, they skipped out on the 2012 contest entirely.

2010: Eva Rivas - Apricot Stone
2011: Emmy - Boom Boom
2013: Dorians - Lonely Planet
2014: Aram MP3 - Not Alone
2015: Genealogy - Face the Shadow
2016: Iveta Mukuchyan - LoveWave
2017: Artsvik - Fly With Me
2018: Sevak Khanagyan - Qami
2019: Srbuk - Walking Out

Iceland

Iceland entered the 2010s on the back of their best result ever the previous year. They remained fairly successful through the first half of the decade - although further top ten placings eluded them. It all went to pot in 2015 though, and they endured a four year drought of NQs, finally broken in 2019 by everyone's favourite provocative leather punks.

2010: Hera Björk - Je ne sais quoi
2011: Sjonni's Friends - Coming Home
2012: Greta Salóme & Jónsi - Never Forget
2013: Eyþór Ingi Gunnlaugsson - Ég á líf
2014: Pollapönk - No Prejudice
2015: María Ólafsdóttir - Unbroken
2016: Greta Salóme - Hear Them Calling
2017: Svala - Paper
2018: Ari Ólafsson - Our Choice
2019: Hatari - Hatrið mun sigra

Europe's poorest and least visited country have managed to well and truly punch above their weight since joining the Contest in 2005. They tend to do best when they lean into their innate wackiness, peaking in 2017 when the return of the Epic Sax Man took them all the way to the top 3.

If they ever win, the subsequent year will be a complete and utter disaster and I would be living for every chaotic moment of it.

2010: Sunstroke Project feat. Olia Tira - Run Away
2011: Zdob și Zdub - So Lucky
2012: Pasha Parfeny - Lăutar
2013: Aliona Moon - O Mie
2014: Cristina Scarlat - Wild Soul
2015: Eduard Romanyuta - I Want Your Love
2016: Lidia Isac - Falling Stars
2017: Sunstroke Project - Hey Mamma!
2018: DoReDos - My Lucky Day
2019: Anna Odobescu - Stay

I couldn't call an obvious winner for any of these this week.

Revisiting Iceland was quite the pleasure for the most part. Armenia have really not been as strong as I would've assumed at all. Moldova a delightful mix of charming oddness and unspeakable garbage. :D

Armenia is really slim pickings aside from the top 2. Really loves, it was completely unnecessary to return in 2013.

"Hear Them Calling" remains perhaps the most baffling non-qualifier of the decade for me, I'd even placed an each-way bet on it. It not only failed to qualify but I've looked back and seen that it finished lower than Serhat's first attempt, and what was a poor effort for Montenegro even by their standards

I think that one of these selections might call for some tactical voting but I don’t think I can bring myself to do it. Oh what a DILEMMA

Obviously you can vote how you like, but I will subject anybody suspected of tactical shenanigans to a volley of STERN TUTTING

At least I’ll finally (and authentically) be able to give ‘Hear Them Calling’ the acclaim it deserves AKA NONE WHATSOEVER :disco:

:D Oh I’m obviously not going to do it.
Good. I'm ok with my favourites not making it, this should reflect Moopy's taste, which sometimes is awful :side-eye: tactical voting here is just wrong, imo.
If you're worried for those Icelandic guys, remember Kala is busy with X Factor Malta, that's one less 0.

Is @VoR only going to count the votes that give Hera Björk douze points? :side-eye:

You know, I would have thought I had a clear idea about the top 2 here as well, but after you lot ROYALLY fucked up Azerbaijan I really don’t trust you anymore.

I think I might slide in your DMs for some DISCERNING BLOC tactical voting :disco:

Let's just say that I think the best two received the same outcome in the contest

Fortunately, I genuinely quite dislike the most probable other contender. :disco:

Oh God I shudder to imagine what a ding dong (:tongueout:) Israel will be, what with everyone swanning in with their Dana Intl. pity votes

MILIM FTW :disco:

I’m making the assumption there that @dmlaw is straight. (Actually I’ve never been sure.) Obviously happy to swap it for a crusty copy of Zipper (May 1994 edition) :horny:

I actually think Iceland is the weakest of those three. They started and ended the decade splendidly, but just pumped out a steady breeze of non-committal, airy queefs for the rest of it.

At their worst, they dish up the most disgracefully bland tat like no other, which is extraordinary given that they believe in elves and what not. Maybe it’s to appease the elves :)

I am straight. And I don't know how to use the Internet, so that copy of Knave will be put to GOOD use.

We're about a third of the way through now, and the year count for winning songs so far is as follows

3: 2019
2: 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2018
1: 2011, 2016,
0: 2010, 2014

Is it that time of year again to regale the chat lounge with my Ill fated trip to CHISINAU. Spoiler alert, they have so few visitors everyone I met naturally assumed I was some sort of SEX TOURIST.

I may actually be returning there this summer for a WEDDING!

Every terrible detail across multiple paragraphs please :disco:

I am SO intrigued

My friends father very kindly booked us an air bnb, or whatever they have over there. As they have zero tourism the only people to book these apartments are men looking for a KNOCKING SHOP. So I had to spend 5 days with my dear friend Diana in an apartment plastered in canvas black and white prints of soft core pornography.

You're friends with a MOLDOVIAN?

They're like the rare pokemon of Eurovision fans. I've only really met one, who was pleasingly quite grubby and smoked like a chimney.

Why would everyone assume that a place with very few tourists would only attract SEX TOURISM? :D I can't see the connection.

Shes very sweet. Her family are very wealthy now, but as a child her bedroom was, and I’m not making this up, a DRAWER.

This just casts poor Kitty Brucknell’s ill-fated trip in an even more tragic light :(
