Normani - Dopamine (Debut Album) (1 Viewer)

You reference Janet Jackson. You got Brandy on your album. You get to channel your inspirations.
They’re literally the reason why I do what I do and why I’m able to be in the position that I am in: Black women. They redefined the standard of beauty, but also just the standard in music. I feel like Brandy and Janet have really been disruptive in their own ways. I love the album Discipline by Janet. (cc @Jark)

that makes so much sense. Candy Paint (my hottest banger in the world right now) reminds me a lot of songs like Rollercoaster, The 1 and So Much Betta.

yes it really is. Take My Time, Distance and All Yours stood out the most. Take My Time should've been a single, it's very early 00s era Janet. the whole album is lush.

The album is a vibe, it's nice to see her sticking to her guns and doing the music she likes instead of chasing a hit, unlike that unbearable being Camilla.
Little Secrets, Big Boy, and Take My Time are keepers.

It's just QUALITY top to bottom. You'd never think it came from a former member of an X Factor girl group. Releasing 1:59 as a single/teaser given what else is on here was a baffling choice though.

No idea how it's going to do chartwise initially (probably NOT GREAT) but surely this will have legs...

Can we have some visuals and performances???

omg what an album. I thought it would be boring, but the production is so SLICK, crisp, and interesting. Even Candy Paint has clicked with me, it was followed by Diamonds (Feat. Megan Thee Stallion) which reminded why I always thought she had potential :disco:

Now release a deluxe version on Monday with this 💋

A very solid R&B album. Very Aaliyah. I'm not familiar with her at all so I didn't know how processed her voice or how good she is live.

Will definitely be listening to this all summer.

i dont know her mariah carey GIF

Thank GOD when the album finally came it was good :D

I don’t think it’s going to do much chart wise but she’s never seemed that bothered by charts. She must make good money off the old girl group.

Projected to debut outside the top 50 in America :(

No surprise there, but just a shame given she had some momentum a few years ago and the album is getting pretty much across the board acclaim.

The lack of visuals or performances around the release is absolutely insane.

Either they have some weird long-term strategy, are stupid or they just want rid.

She always seems either unsure or uninterested to me. I personally don't need visuals or promo, especially when it comes to R&B, because the lyrics and vocals ultimately always speak for themselves, but if she's going to try and compete in THIS day and age then she's gonna have to put more into her career. Doesn't she know the stans and gays have the attention span of a peanut? Doesn't she know that they won't settle for anything less than ERAS?

not launching an album with physicals these days is simply insane. it's the difference between a top 10 debut and good press and an outside-top 50/100 flunk for most artists who aren't huge.

combined with the lack of visuals it feels like they just put this out for contractual reasons and she'll be dropped. which would be an awful shame but ideally she'd be picked up by a better label. she's a star and should be huge.

It's a great album!

I don't understand what was the reason to spend money releasing it (digitally) and then letting it die a slow death?? Was it a tax write off??

At this point I think they just want to get her off the label. I’m sure they wanted more songs like Motivation and she doesn’t want to make that kind of music. They probably figure just release and let her flop as punishment.

Sadly I think if she was a white artist they would support her more. The album is really good and far better than whatever the hell Camilla is trying to do.

camila will always be a mystery to me. Sure she gets a huge hit from each album but do her albums actually do any good business in the long run?? Is that one-big single enough to sustain a whole album campaign, not to mention that she gets multiple opportunities; if I recall correctly she was dropped and then signed onto a different label :o The same goes for Selena but I don't know, I guess she has had big albums and sales (not streaming only) and is far likable.

In a marketing masterstroke, she's been slagging off certain songs on the album - Still, Little Secrets and Take My Time 🥴

well she's #1 somewhere 'cos Take My Time is my HOTTEST BOP right now - the outro is all kinds of :disco: Candy Paint is my other hottest bop, in a very different, throwback to 2005 kinda way. the album is fucking great.
