Proposition 8 (and later same-sex marriage developments)

The religious right TIZZY is going to be SO GOOD. :D

The story about the court clerk who's been jailed in Kentucky for refusing to issue licences for same sex marriages and refusing to say she wouldn't try to stop her colleagues issuing them is almost too good to be true.

She's been married 4 times, and apparently she became pregnant during her first marriage by her third husband, but that the kids were legally adopted by her second husband. But she then found God and he forgave her fornication and wanton disregard for the sanctity of marriage.

As funny a story as it is, it's ALL about woman who sits next to her.

Someone's started a Twitter account for her :D @workingnexttokimdavis

It's @nexttokimdavis

"DID GOD ORDER YOU NOT TO REFILL THE XEROX TRAY, TOO? GODDAMN IT SOME OF US ARE TRYING TO GO HOME TO OUR FIRST HUSBAND"

"#KimDavis will be out by Monday. No way she's not going to fuck up my barbecue."

"@GovMikeHuckabee ONE WEEK OF #KimDavis EATING YOUR PB&J OUT OF THE FRIDGE AND YOU'D SEND HER TO SIBERIA. TRUST ME."

A majority of Stormont assembly members have for the first time voted to legalise same-sex marriage in Northern Ireland, but a voting mechanism triggered by the Democratic Unionists means the law change will not happen.

The vote is the fifth attempt to make gay marriage legal in Northern Ireland, the only part of the UK that still does not recognise same-sex marriage in law.

Before the vote, the Democratic Unionists (DUP) vowed to prevent the change from passing into law. The largest party in the Stormont assembly said it would use a parliamentary veto known as a “petition of concern” to torpedo any vote in favour of gay marriage.

Under the complex rules of power-sharing, unionist and nationalist parties can claim a bill or a piece of legislation cannot pass through the devolved assembly because it fails to command cross-community support.

In the four previous votes to attempt to bring in gay marriage reform there have been narrow majorities against change. In April, the margin was only two votes against gay marriage.

What a ridiculous system.

Same sex marriage is hardly any more or less offensive to Northern Ireland's protestant/ unionist community than it is the Catholics republicans, is it?

So hot Italians can now have a civil union(!). Still progress is progress.

How quickly it all happened in Germany; what Schulz did was fabulous. (But Merkel probably knew exactly what her comment would lead to anyway)

How quickly has this happened? I'm so jealous. It took over 6 months and a LOT of homophobia here...

Yaaaaasssss Apoca's finally getting married y'all :disco:

Yay for Germany.

So it has overtaken the UK in terms of equal rights (Britain's Prime Minister Arlene Foster will never allow this).

Australia and Germany were the last two who really late to the party. Where NEXT? Would Italy be too much to ask?

They should have a referendum next summer - after all, they're out of the World Cup so they'll have fuck else to do.

What a strange thing to have a PUBLIC VOTE on
While the result is indeed lovely, having to sit aside while a large majority of heterosexual people debate and decide on my rights must be really uncomfortable.

Oh it is absolutely hideous.

What is even worse is the requirement to remain calm and respectful and to pretend that swivel-eyed loons have valid concerns and opinions. If you don't then you are seen as uppity you see.

I think the Irish government (and now the Australian government) ought to apologise for subjecting the LGBT population to the 6 month public witch trial that preceded these votes.

They won't of course - they are too busy basking in the afterglow and trying to claim credit for the outcome that they themselves were too cowardly to implement.

Malcolm Turnball has just shot himself in the foot with the whole thing. There won’t be much basking in any afterglow.
Also, the longer it takes him to get this thing through, the worse he is going to look.

So the DUP are dead against regulatory divergence with the rest of the UK, except when it comes to marriage?
And abortion
And human rights
And creationism being taught in schools
And Sunday trading.
