Like many US country hits, this did nothing in the UK, but it seems to be a staple on the other side of the pond.

Reba was Kelly Clarkson’s mother in law for a few years and they seem to still be on decent terms. I do love a bit of high-drama storytelling in this vein.

Great song, but much prefer the original, largely as I'm a fan of Bobbie Gentry's voice a lot more than Reba's - and her songwriting. I think that makes her version a lot more powerful, considering when it was written.

I do think you could trace a line from Bobbie Gentry through to Lana Del Rey. I did a lockdown deep dive and enjoyed it a lot more than I imagined.

Oh Lana 100% modeled herself after Bobbie Gentry, at least in terms of aesthetics.

I'm a basic bitch though so I prefer the MELODRAMA of the Reba version.

Reba is one of my all time faves and her version is the one for me. Shocking that it didn’t hit #1 here as it was MASSIVE (only went #8) but it did manage to chart on the dance charts at #42 :D

For an artist with so many number ones, a lot of her best/most famous songs fell short: Fancy, The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia, Why Haven’t I Heard From You, She Thinks His Name Was John, I’m A Survivor

I don't know if it says more about the UK's historic indifference to US country, or my own ignorance. But I remember being very surprised when I discovered that the crazy gun lady from the Tremors movie was actually a famous singer.

I think I first heard of her when I started following the US charts closely around 2000/2001 and she was enjoying one of her seemingly umpteenth comebacks with a song called Somebody, which I quite liked at the time.

I'm not sure she's ever been remotely pushed or even released in the UK. I suppose she was already a bit too old to ride the Shania Twain/Faith Hill wagon around the turn of the century, and before that Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers were pretty much the only US country stars who had a profile here as far as I can tell.

There were a couple of Europe/Australia exclusive compilations and random singles in the late 90s to give her a push in those markets but they didn’t do anything

I wish she’d tour Australia, she could surely do decent size venues. Being a walking meme helps bring in new fans too

10/10 for sure

You know I might have been born just PLAIN WHITE TRASH
but Fancy was my name
