I do wonder if it's "nailed on for Christmas number one". The news will have died down closer to Christmas and it all just depends where it sits on a Spotify playlist and whether they play ball.
 
Yes, I think he should have held on for two or three weeks for maximum chart impact.

I would like for it to get to #1. For me, Mariah, Wham! and The Pogues are the golden trio of Christmas records from the 80s and 90s.

But I was thinking more so that they all originally peaked at #2, but Mariah and Wham! have since both made #1.

For many years it felt like Fairytale Of New York kept pace with both of them as a perennial favourite, but over the last few years it seems like it has drifted.

Oh no. He has been unwell for what seems like a long time. Still very sad to see him die at a relatively young age.
 
I must admit it does pique my interest on where it will get to on the chart. A number 1 in December is still a great result even if it doesn’t hold on until Christmas.
 
Bless him, he did very well to get to the age he did considering. The Pogues are well worth investigating past Fairytale…

Absolutely, the first 5 Pogues albums are all necessary. They were an odd combination of people and not really built for the long haul but what they accomplished in such a short period of time was remarkable.
 
RIP. So sad. He was a brilliant songwriter and artist, and Fairytale is still a brilliant song - fuck the people who choose to get offended by it!

Particularly when the band and Kirsty all seemed to accept why the change was necessary now.

It's a bit like how locally the gammons are STILL objecting to the removal of references to Colston and associated imagery.

I understand why other people may not be offended by it. But to fight for your RIGHT to sing it and offend and upset other people just makes you a bit of a twat.

Well I'm gay and I think it's ridiculous to get offended by it.
 
Let's not derail the death thread with this. Fairytale of New York is a brilliant one-act play in songform, a rich character study conveying so much in just a few verses. It intended for their third album and nothing more but the song took on a whole life of its own way beyond its intended boundaries and. once the context changed, the language fell to be reconsidered.
