I genuinely AM an Alcatraz Stan and it's not because I was an even bigger Federer Stan.

Wooop! You ain’t getting that record Djokovic, it’s OVAH

🎉
I was more bothered about the Wimbledon record tbh. At least let Roger have something (until it inevitably goes to Carlos).

Pleased Carlos won again! I do want Djokovic to get to 25 though to remove talk of horrible old Margaret Court’s inflated 24.

Andy retiring, Angie retiring, Rafa on the cusp, Stan surely not far away.

HELP.

I loved that period of about three years where Kerber was straight fire. she was GREAT fun to watch. big fan.

Angelika said NOT ON MY WATCH.

(Pretty dire match from Naomi though)

paging @Apoca and other moopy tennis correspondents - who do we fancy for the US open?

does Djokovic have enough in the tank after Paris? can Coco do the double? does Paolini's hot streak continue? many intrigues :disco:

I would have said Sinner but let's see how he bounces back from his clostebol mess this week. But the courts play fast enough for him to do well and Alcaraz has been BO5 beast - I'm not sure where Djokovic's motivation or head is after claiming that elusive singles gold, plus his body has gone through quite some wear and tear this year.

Coco has been in horrible form this summer, it'd be a shock if she played according to seed. Iga will have her hands full with Andreeva and maybe Collins in R16/QF, and I think she's running on a depleted tank mentally and physically. Aryna looked great in Cincy and for me, she's going in as the clear favourite.

Sabalenka has to be the favourite at this stage, but it could be one of many as is standard in the women's game these days.

Who would have predicted Djokovic to win the gold at the Olympics?! After that I'd say he has a chance after a difficult year. Hard to see past Alcaraz or Sinner otherwise.

I've never been able to stand "C'MAAAAAHN" Collins, bleurgh. Good riddance! I was at her match against recently retired (:() Kerber at the Aussie Open this year and cheered vociferously enough in support of lovely Angie for Danielle to SCOWL in my direction. A #win for me if not quite for Angie, alas.

It's been wild seeing tennis become so newsworthy these past few weeks, first with the Draper/Auger-Aliassime fiasco and then Sinner's positive tests. I wish it was in the news for better reasons, but any drama is good drama I suppose! Sad that we've lost Felix already but Mensik getting another statement win this year bodes well for his future.

You'd think one of Sinner/Alcaraz/Djokovic for the men's title and Sabalenka for the women's if she can keep her head together when the pressure ramps up. In the absence of Ons (:( at her trajectory since that Wimby final), I'll be rooting for Iga but girl needs to stop being so stubborn and adjust her skillset to the surface. I hope she does because a) she can, and b) her Slam results outside the French have been pitiful for a while now.

I note that we've lost these former champs already: Thiem + Wawrinka on the men's; Stephens, Andreescu, Raducanu on the women's. That's the last time we see Thiem here (:( at his trajectory for like the last three years), and I'm guessing that's the last time we see Wawrinka and possibly Stephens too (don't follow her much but when's the last time she did anything of note?)?

:(

I hope we aren't looking at a burn out for Carlos. During the early rounds of Wimbledon and in the Olympics in particular, he seemed more mentally fragile than we are used to. He really needs to dial back a bit on the endorsement commitments. It's all come very early in his career - even with Federer, it was a gradual development into that superstar statesman role that he made for himself

Annnd Djokovic gone too. The bottom half of the draw blown wide open. Sadly looks like Zverev will come through to the final from there 😢 but I hope I'm wrong.

Well that aged well, LOL! Still think Sabalenka's the fave on the women's side at least, and you'd think Sinner's the prohibitive fave on the men's but I wonder how he's gonna handle the increased scrutiny in these latter stages. I'd assume the victor of the QF vs. Medvedev (who def has a strong chance at the win there) goes on to take the tournament, but I'm enjoying all the craziness thus far.

It wasn't exactly a wild prediction given those 3 have dominated the slams for over 2 years now, but I agree it's interesting to see this men's draw look more like the female draws of recent slams.

The winner of Medvedev/Sinner is the safe bet now, but it will be interesting to see if Draper can challenge either should he win his next match. He's yet to drop a set so far, and will be coming in to the late stages fresh and with confidence. His draw has been favourable, yes, but he won Stutgart this year and beat Alcaraz at Queens back in June, so is capable of big wins.

I'm glad some people are able to hold on to optimism :)

*frantically double checks the h2h record of Zverev against Sinner and Medvedev*

You can trust that demon child to choke at least once per fortnight, that's the source of the little inner peace I have left.

can Grigor Dimitrov at least make the final please? I don't think I care about anyone else on the men's side. playing well and he's never made a slam final.

Omg passthatdutch I hope you are not suggesting that my predictions lack guts!!! I called Sinner winning the AO in Oct last year, and said that Krejcikova would win Wimbledon* I'll have you know.

I caught Draper scrolling through my IG Stories earlier this year so I've decided that we're PALS. (Although I wasn't impressed by the Cincy incident.) My only question with him is conditioning. I think ADM is the fave in their match but wouldn't be surprised if Jack takes him out. You'd think Sinner/Medvedev would be a step too far unless the pair of them end up killing each other over five. It's a fairly strange US Open anyway I suppose...

I barely ever root for American players nowadays (I'd like to root for Coco but good god that forehand), but it's nice for them that they've got three homegrown players in the semis and are guaranteed a male finalist. Tennis needs a boost over there.

* at some point in her career, def not this year...

Not at all. Your post joked that your original post aged well (and I made the same Djokovic/Sinner/Alcaraz prediction in my earlier post). I simply meant it didn't seem a wild suggestion at the start of the tournament.

Completely agree with your points re the Draper side of the draw. I'll be watching and cheering your mate along tonight anyway 😉

I'd also like to root for Coco but she's made it hard lately. I'm wanting Sabalenka to win the womens at this point. Could be a good final with Muchova (what a return!) and Swiatek looking likely to meet her there.
