Or maybe it’s just a glitch in the matrix

Here for this, I think! I was disappointed by the Matrix sequels at the time, but looking back I appreciate how BONKERS they were.

It’s not real babe :D
Oh :D

WELL I have heard some crazy kooky stuff about the film so I bought it immediately

one thing being the possibility of it being set in the real world where The Matrix film exists

Trailer coming TOMORROW:

Not sure if I’m really interested in this at all. I rewatched The Matrix this year and…
I mean at the time it was visually exciting but very po-faced, and it’s hard to get as excited about the effects 20+ years later.

I didn’t rewatch the other two, I feel like the effects upped the ante but it became even MORE po-faced and pleased with itself

I dread to THINK now

also the fact that everything they've made since has been... well...

Great trailer but I have zero memory of the original. Not sure I can be bothered to rewatch it.

I rewatched it recently, it holds up very well! Just a wonderfully paced sci-fi action film... the sequels are a bit of a different story, I'll probably rewatch those soon too but I do remember appreciating them more when I gave them another try a few years after they came out.

OK, this looks potentially brilliant. I'm slightly shook.

releasing it on HBO Max simultaneously is a mistake. this could be a big event for cinemagoers, it should have room to breathe there first.

no idea if there's any truth to this but...

from someone on Twitter

The rumor I've heard is that 'Resurrections' takes place in a world where 'The Matrix' movies exist. People talk liking the first one and not being as into the sequels. "Bullet time" is referenced. It's all apparently VERY meta.

Just watch eXistenZ, the real sci-fi alternate universe mind fuck film of 1999 :disco: Where the Matrix has dated, Cronenberg has only got more prescient!

That trailer is fantastic but given the utter state of the sequels, I'm dubious.

I can't see anything beating that moment in the cinema when Trinity first leapt into the air in the opening minutes of the first film as the camera spun around her. I'd never seen anything like it :disco:

this is out now with a healthy but hardly glowing 65 on Metacritic. almost every review seems to say it's fun but mostly retreads old ground, is enjoyably meta but lacks a visual signature etc. seeing as cinemas are closed anyway I guess I'll watch it at home in the new year...

I kept intermittently falling asleep and by the end I had no interest in rewatching to see what I missed.

New Morpheus was hot though.

I can't wait, and the worse the critical/fan reaction the BETTER quite frankly!

I loved it, I think by leaning into the metaness — was the best possible way they could have done a sequel.

However, the last scene was so obviously filmed a lot later likely based audience test feedback or a note/request by the studio :D

this flopped in at #3 with just $22.5m across five days. globally it's at 70m (not out everywhere yet). at best it might get to around 250m which is really disappointing considering the initial excitement.

whoever decided to release it the weekend after Spider-Man should be FIRED.

OMG at all of this, I loved it - the metacommentary was actually done well for once in one of these franchise revivals, and was actually integral to the film in a lot of ways. Also bravo for the writers for including a LOT of stuff from the sequels, when it would have been so easy to gloss over them. When I tell you I SCREAMED when
the Merovingian showed up :D
I also had no idea
Niobe would be back,
which was really nicely handled. There was also a good sense of the world having had natural development from the original trilogy, again with a lot of ideas from the second and third films like
the 'good' programs (and now machines too).

One area that was quite disappointing was the fight choreography and editing though, I know the original is a classic on that front so I wasn't expecting this to match it but it was actively bad at points. It felt like there was a cut every single time someone was about to land a punch or kick, which took me out of things a bit once I started noticing it/looking for it :D

Have to say I didn't enjoy this at all, but the one thing I did like was the bots all jumping out of the buildings to be bombs which I thought was very creepy/original/cool

I thought this started off fairly promisingly with the recreations of earlier scenes and the whole knowing forced sequel planning sequence (thanks for your single line Christina Ricci). That neatly threw up all the reasons why not to make this... but then never addressed why you actually should. By the time we got to the arrival of eternal buzzkill Jada Pinkett Smith in her godawful aged-up incarnation, it was clear that there was going to be little more to this than the conclusion of the far from legendary romance between Neo and Trinity - and who had honestly been pining for closure on that?

Strange how the FX were worse and none of the big sequences came close to the thrills of the first two. NPH was alright but Johnny Groff was no match for Hugo Weaving. Nice to see Max Riemelt pop up (essential gay misery porn Freier Fall OUT NOW) but his Matrix look did not flatter.

Agreed, I liked that too.

well i loved this after all the negative murmurs that'd reached me! an eight from me as it's obviously nothing on the original but as good as i could've hoped for a sequel 20 years later. things i liked and hated:

- the meta stuff and the central role of the love story
- keanu and carrie, their chemistry and their white hairs
- i really disliked jada pinkett smith (the aging job was dire) and priyanka chopra, as usual.
- no one will ever match weaving but i quite liked groff! harris i thought wasn't a great casting choice, he just looked out of place.
- i loved yahya and his fancy suits but morpheus was a bit of an afterthought.
- the special effects and the fights were not great - the matrix eyes were particularly poor, though i did like the kamikaze idea. as mentioned the first had some proper jaw-dropping effects and it looked like they didn't even try this time. was there something to the sparks in the garage scene? and the slow speed? it felt like there was a lot of emphasis on it but it was just there.
- some of the costuming was shit - naiobi and bugs in particular. is short blue hair on a woman still considered edgy? wow.
- on that note the merovingian, fun as it was to have him back, looked ridiculous! wish we got monica bellucci in derelicte by mugatu as well.
- i liked the use of the old scenes
