UK: The Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson years - problematic + infected + broke the law + electoral poison + sneks + not very good + OVER (funny)

Fun fact Facebook memories just reminded me of. It’s 6 years today since Cameron resigned.
You honestly could've said this was at least a decade ago and I'd have believed you  So much has happened since then!

Here for at least another two years of Boris dragging the Tories to the bottom of the ocean

I noticed that the moratorium on analysing the disastrous effects of Brexit seems to be lifting on the six-year anniversary of the vote

Give it another four years and the UK will be on all fours, the door unlocked, begging for entry into the Single Market and Customs Union

At which point, the EU will say that our economy is too bad and we can go on the wait list with Albania and North Macedonia.

Just to follow up on this nonsense
Turnout WAS way down (but I guess that's normal for a by-election vs a general election?)
But Conservative's combined total votes was 57% down, Labour's 50% down, and LibDems 117% up! :disco:

:WellThereWeAre:

Not that any of these stats mean anything, but I just wanted to use his own warped yardstick to smack him in the face

Turnout was unusually high for both by By-Election standards. Comparing it to a General Election is just nonsense really.

‘the girls’

Oh get to fuck.

BBC News - Boris Johnson 'actively thinking about' third term as PM
In a way, I'm glad. He'll never recover his popularity at this point so he's all but guaranteeing their destruction at the next election.

That said, I'd still gladly accept his resignation and undignified death at his earliest convenience.

I'm getting LAST DAYS OF ROME vibes from all these articles and statements from Boris Johnson, much like when Theresa May was clinging on for dear life.

Surely they won't do anything during the summer recess and he'll get a boost at party conference, so perhaps he will last into 2023, but for sure the Tories know he cannot lead them to an election in 2024.

All this talk of staying on and doing another term screams of someone who knows that their legacy has been stained and is determined to stay on to fix it.

Like walking into a bar and the music is SHITE but you drove fucking miles to get there so you’ll stay for another few songs and see if it gets better… but then they start playing Ed Sheeran :)

He just wants to equal Thatcher by winning 3 elections. He thinks of nothing but his place in the history books which, at the moment, is as the shittest, most corrupt, most bigoted arsehole ever to have wangled the role.

Not to be alarmist, but I find his statement about a third term quite troubling.

It's a bit like all those statements Putin made over the years suggesting what he would end up doing.

I don't doubt that Boris Johnson would subvert democracy to serve his own ego.

I don't think it is different to Thatcher saying she was going to go 'on and on' after the 1987 election (which started the process to her downfall in 1990). It's bunker delusion (in addition to the already engrained self-interested) setting in.

I really want to move to the Netherlands. I can't stand it here in this awful venal country.
come join us! the housing market is absolutely out of control and the Dutch (without realising it) are a touch casually racist, but society otherwise is highly functioning :disco:

But what's the money like hun? I'm a material girl in a material world and I have expenses to pay and mouths to feed.

salaries are significantly higher in Amsterdam than in London, at least in my industry! we also get a 13th month salary in the Netherlands.

and there's also a low-tax incentive for mid-to-high earners who move here from another country that caps your maximum income tax at 30% for 5 years. it's great. I currently pay around 17.5% total tax.

I lived in Madrid for 5 years and June to early September could be HORRIFIC. I mean, great to lounge in the pool all day and so on but if you actually HAVE TO DO THINGS, you may disintegrate.

Also if you think the Dutch are casually racist, Spanish society is even less multicultural and the attitudes towards (darker-skinned) immigrants verge between PITY and CONDESCENSION.

Lest we forget a NEOFASCIST party has 15% of the votes in the latest Spanish general election and the socialists are set to lose the next one to the Spanish Tories, a party on CORRUPTION STEROIDS and a healthy dose of FRANCO AUTHORITARIANISM.

Everywhere has pros and cons. We just notice the UK's more because we live or have lived here. If you run away from one shitshow you will end up in another, I know I did!

True. I expect lots of people think the place they live is the worst (and the UK feels like that right now because it is an especially awful time, in context)

Noted on Madrid. At least the sun shines!

I refuse to believe that the Netherlands, home to beloved children's character - N-word Steve or something - could be racist.
