The reviews from Sunset Blvd on Broadway are in and they're pretty spectacular, particularly for a Lloyd Webber show who the US critics notoriously hate.
I don't know who to believe!! 🥴

IT'S COME HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOME AT LAST

(The vinyl copy I pre-ordered back in February.)

Nicole absolutely EATS As If We Never Said Goodbye :disco:

It really is a song that only works when performed by a genuinely demented diva who barely even has to act.

"So WATCH ME FLY
We ALL KNOW I can DOOO IIIIIT!"

Let's have some more unhinged reviews!

Broadway Review: Nicole Scherzinger Stuns in ‘Sunset Blvd.’
BOOK A TICKET! NOW!

Nicole Scherzinger mesmerizes—and raises the roof—in an electric, fabulous revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber‘s “Sunset Blvd.” on Broadway, directed by Jamie Lloyd.

Wreathed in swirling stage smoke, edging towards the audience in a black slip, arms outstretched as if wanting, defying, daring, threatening and inviting us all at once, Nicole Scherzinger as Norma Desmond isn’t kidding.

“With one look I’ll ignite a blaze,” she sings in Norma’s camp-to-the-max, melodramatic “With One Look,” the standout, sweeping Sunset Blvd. song that is a succinct résumé of the power of the silent movie star that Norma is, or was. That song over, our Broadway audience, to varying degrees of whooping, standing, hollering, and applauding… well, lost its damn mind.

From The Daily Beast:
Nicole Scherzinger was always meant to get these 'Sunset Blvd.' Raves

I need to thank Nicole Scherzinger for so many things: For giving one of the most transfixing, volcanic, roof-shattering musical theater performances I’ve ever seen in the current Broadway production of Sunset Blvd. For giving me and all of my theater-loving friends something to gush and bond over every three or four minutes or so, when our bodies start quaking again in aftershock to her seismic performance. And, most of all, for giving me a reason to be my favorite thing in the world: absolutely smug.

:D

I think we can dismiss rumours that Gaga will lead an LA transfer as equally insane!

A Face In The Crowd was a bit dodgy. Had serious potential, but slow moving in the first act, a complete disconnect in the second act and no memorable songs let it down.

The River with Paul McGann was quite excellent. Totally worth it for a 2 hour, no interval play.

I saw John Lithgow in Giant on Saturday. Absolutely incredible. So so well written. First pick for the Olivier next year.

Got a good deal for Juno and the Paycock on Friday though, so we’ll see.

Also seeing Curious Case of Benjamin Button later this week.

Trying to get tickets for 4:48 Psychosis at the Royal Court today was like some Taylor Swift Ticketmaster fiasco - sold out in minutes, I kept getting tickets in my basket and getting to checkout then it would crash, over and over until all the dates were sold out. Utterly insane and ridiculous :D

Having to go to STRATFORD-UPON-AVON for the second half of its run instead :MeredithMarks:

Well, I thought The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was dreadful. The rest of the audience were on their feet and clapping along, so clearly I was in a minority.

I'm going to London soon and we can't decide what to see, I was kind of thinking Moulin Rouge or Cabaret? They're both kind of expensive but I'm worried about getting no good rush/discounted tickets for other shows when we're there.
Mean Girls do cheap-ish front row seats, but the London production appears to be very mediocre with cheap screens, has anyone seen it?
I heard good things about Hadestown but the few songs I listened to didn't do it for me, I think some things just aren't meant for me (Hamilton, Come From Away).

Not seen Mean Girls - thought the film version of the musical was 6/10 and fine. Didn’t entice me to see it on stage and kind of felt it would be similar to the Heathers musical - full of excited 16 year olds and few others.

Similar to Moulin Rouge, I’ve heard great things but I despise the film and the hotchpotch of jukebox songs is off putting for me, but again I’ve heard great things.

Cabaret - I saw this last month finally. Prices seem to have dropped a bit since the bigger celebrity cast left. Adam Gillen is famous I think but not from anything I’ve watched. He was excellent! It’s definitely an experience, very different. I recommend the Dress Circle rather than stalls for a flawless view. Unfortunately I thought the other two leads were a bit weak.

How about the new production of Oliver? I’ve booked for January, but it’s a transfer from Chichester and is meant to be very good.

Thanks for the suggestions, Oliver is not on yet when we're there, pity.

I'm not sure about Moulin Rouge either, I hate the film as well but at least the show seems to be quite the spectacle.

I'd probably book Upper Circle for Cabaret even if we're no that close, we don't want to spend more than £80 on a ticket.

I miss Disney's Day Seats, always got excellent seats for their productions (I have no interest in the Lion King though).

I went to see Mean Girls earlier this month (sadly not October 3rd, but it was a Wednesday and I *did* wear pink :disco:), I don't think the songs were amazing but I think it helped that I was familiar with some from the movie at the start of the year. It's a fun show and the Aaron Samuels they have is a lot fitter (and more believable that he'd be with Regina) than the movie musical.

The same week I went to see I Wish You Well (the Diana Vickers take on Gwyneth Paltrow) just before the end of it's run, and it was SUCH a joy. So many pop culture references, I think my favourite was Terry saying that the trial was going to ruin the tour, the world tour but I also loved the reference to Cheryl's "whenever you're ready". I wondered how much the straights would understand.

I saw Cabaret a few months back when Cara Delevingne was playing Sally and thought it was AMAZING. I wasn't really familiar with the story or any songs (aside from "Maybe This Time") beforehand. I'm tempted to go back and see it with Katherine Langford, perhaps around my birthday at the start of January.

I saw Mean Girls last night. The actor playing Aaron Samuels really is a regulation hottie.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button has opened to glowing reviews.

I saw it last week and thought it was one of the worst things I’ve seen. By far in my Bottom 5 musicals.

Then I saw Jodie Whitaker in The Duchess which was actually rather good. Nothing spectacular but I enjoyed it. £20 ticket and now I know why - the theatre was only about 60% full :o

Have I reported on Starlight Express yet?

Dreadful old tat which is a 10p version of the deluxe West End version from the 80s.

I can't believe they designed a set in an empty box which barely allows the performers to skate around in it. Everything is performed at a soporific level and the races run at about 5 mph. The thrill of the original production (not just from wondering who might have fallen into the stalls in Act One and not be available to return) is totally gone. The spinning bridge that used to create the bridge between the stalls and the dress circle is gone, so the races are totally changed and Electra's originally amazing entrance is dulled. The races let all the teams set off at different times to make sure they never get within ten metres of eachother.

Apparently 15 of the 21 roles were played by understudies or covers last weekend, which is amazing given how limp the skating is in this new version.

2/10.

I keep hearing the same. I’m still shocked because they had such an opportunity to redesign that massive studio without the restrictions of usual theatre fixtures.

I still want to go just because it was the first thing I ever saw as a child. Just not prepared to pay the prices that they’re charging at the moment.

I saw Starlight being advertised everywhere when I was in WEMBLEY the other day and really thought about getting tickets; will give it a miss now!

Lots of people seem to like it, especially if you didn't see the original. It's the first show I ever saw in London, so it made quite an impact back then. I was obsessed with it for a while :D

I'd like to see the German version which has been playing since the 80s in a custom built theatre. I lived quite close to it when I was living there, but never went! It's a shame they didn't go for something similar with this new UK version.

I liked the changes they made to script on the whole, but they've lost some really good songs in the process too.

You can get single seats for a decent price if you go at short notice. We paid about £100 for our tickets a year in advance. We sat in the section one back so you can see all the stage and the bit of track that extends out from it. There's another track that ran behind us.

Yeah, I think this one is not for a solo trip. I still get offered them occasionally on the daily TodayTix price drops for Gold Members, but it’s only ever the super premium seats being knocked down to £90-£100.

Oh boo, I wouldn’t mind seeing it. But I’m more a £15-£30 theatre week bitch, and just getting to Wembley always seems a faff even if I could be arsed shelling out a bit more. Especially if it’s largely SHIT :D
