TV Ratings 2021

Did anyone catch Before We Die on channel 4 with Lesley Sharp? I am catching up on it just now. It is very compulsive viewing.

It's filmed here, so I did partly for that. It was kind of 7/10 for me. I was probably put off by Mr L griping about how it wasn't as good as the original all the time, though.

Yes. I was going to say I think it is set in Bristol. I had no idea it was a remake? I am only on episode 4 of 6 just now, and am really enjoying it.

The original is Swedish. Not sure where he watched it. I didn't.

I think it might have been on BBC4. I watched the first episode of the remake and it felt too familiar to stick with. Also Lesley Sharp didn't seem as good to me as usual.

I know she has been in MANY dramas over the years (my favourites off the top of my head being Clocking Off and Daylight Robbery) but you are so right. She seemed so WOODEN at parts in this, especially in the first episode. Strange considering she is usually pretty faultless.

She really is incredibly watchable in everything I've seen her in. She usually manages to elevate quite dull material, but is curiously flat in this.

What was the Wimbledon match at #4? The Men's Final was #5, and the Women's Final nowhere. But that top rated match was the second Monday. Murray went out before then, didn't he?

@Rita - Love Island increases from 3.128m to 4.087m when viewing on smartphones and tablets etc is included.

Was it not the match with Emma Raducanu? She's British and it was a pretty dramatic match.

By comparison, Dragons' Den increases only from 3.357m to 3.390m.

That is a BIG JUMP. Shows that the younger generations viewing habits differ greatly from everyone else’s. I would NEVER watch on a mobile phone!

I do occasionally watch things on my tablet, but it's very much second choice or if I'm away from home.

Strangely I don’t watch much tv when I am away even though I have all the facilities to do so. I tend to just record what I want to see then catch up when I get back home.

My housemate is very strange. She watches stuff on her tablet while working, even though she's working in a room with a massive TV next to her. She also listens to tinny sounding music from Spotify from her mobile phone too, despite being in the room with the Alexa that is linked to her Spotify account. Some people seem to just be more comfortable watching and listening to stuff in an inferior quality and I can't get my head around it.

Love Island increases from 3.180m to 3.986m with laptop/tablet/smartphone viewing included. I don't have access to all individual episodes of EastEnders to calculate its average, but the top episode of the week increased from 3.326m to 3.690, so Love Island is comfortably ahead of it.

It would also put it at #9 in the overall chart, as no other programme does anywhere near as well on laptop etc viewing. In fact I think EastEnders is probably the closest, of the programmes in this chart at least.

Those Casualty figures are poor. May go the same way as Holby City before long.

Drama and sport fans helped BBC iPlayer to achieve a record-breaking first half of the year in 2021.

Programmes were streamed over 3.3 billion times between January and June this year, up 8% on the same period last year, and up a massive 59% on the same period in 2019 following huge growth in early 2020.

The second half of the year has also kicked off to a record-breaking start, thanks to the huge popularity of Euro 2020 and Wimbledon, both of which were available to watch on iPlayer in Ultra HD. The Euro 2020 final between England and Italy on 11 July set a new live viewing record on iPlayer, with 5.8 million streams, while the Wimbledon Men’s singles final drew big numbers too, with 1.7 million live streams as Novak Djokovic beat Matteo Berrettini.

So far, 2021 on iPlayer has seen:

Police corruption thriller Line Of Duty’s return become the biggest single episode of the year, as the first episode of the sixth series was streamed 8.7 million times - also more than any single episode across the whole of last year.
Viewers have also raced through the previous five series, with the show streamed a total of 127 million times in the first six months of the year.
Line of Duty is now the second most popular programme of the year behind only EastEnders, which is enjoying its best year ever on iPlayer with 140 million streams in the first half of the year.
Other big hits of the year so far include exotic thriller The Serpent, starring Tahar Rahim and Jenna Coleman; Jimmy McGovern’s prison drama Time, starring Sean Bean and Stephen Graham; Northern Ireland-set crime drama Bloodlands, starring James Nesbitt; and Welsh mystery drama The Pact.

The most popular episodes per series on iPlayer between January and June 2021 are:

Dan McGolpin, Director, BBC iPlayer and channels, says: “There’s been a step-change in the popularity of BBC iPlayer over the last two years and during the first half of 2021 we’ve seen further growth including some incredible numbers for Line of Duty, the best half-year on record for EastEnders and a spectacular performance for Euro 2020. It’s also fantastic to see so many brand-new series attracting large audiences with The Serpent, Time, Bloodlands, The Pact and A Perfect Planet all featuring episodes in the iPlayer top ten.”

I can't give an exact figure for EastEnders as I don't have the figures for two of the episodes, which were outside of the top 50 programmes, seemingly due to all the Olympics coverage. The #50 programme (Tuesday's The One Show) had 2.849m.

I suppose as it’s times have been messed around with due to The Euros and then The Olympics the figures will be impacted.

The figures for both Corrie and Emmerdale both look quite low too, but they all seem to be on consistent decline now.

And people watching on iPlayer ahead of TV broadcast (the are still being put there, aren't they?) won't be counted, either.

Yes they were last week, but I think it will be business as usual from here on in unless they are just going to carry on that way? Surely not?

Again no figure for EastEnders as only one episode made the overall top fifty - that episode had 2.993m - all other episodes must have had below 2.910m which is what the lowest programme (Thursday's ITV teatime news) had.

@Rita - Love Island up to 4.570m after smartphone etc viewing included.
