Did it end so badly for the finale to be the lowest rating show of the week, and the 7th lowest of the whole run?

The finale was 37% down on last year, although again, that was a simulcast, so not an entirely similar comparison.

I think I have said this before but I always tend to find the last week of these things with less people, and less drama with love ins boring on all reality shows I watch. It was a great series, but with the winner it showed that the characters were quite weak although when there was lots of them it really worked. 🤷‍♀️

It was actually 50.9% for I'm A Celebrity (according to thinkbox, anyway), and 54.8% for Strictly.

That really is brilliant and shows that there is plenty life in the old dog yet. I see the usual rags are going for the jugular and saying it is a flop though. 🤦‍♀️

It's a long time since I've watched, but I just find the idea of watching daily and investing all that time into six weeks or however long and then NOT watching the final really quite bizarre.

Yes I do agree with that. As much as I zone out in the final week I am always very interested in the final to see who wins.

All I've seen is on twitter, and what I've seen has been fairly positive in terms of saying it was a fairly nice entertaining bunch.

It'll be interesting to see how it holds next week. Last year its first full week average was very narrowly ahead of Strictly. Then for the next week it dipped below and stayed there for the final week.

The mail and Sun have both had articles saying how the ratings have dropped like a stone. Glad that social media has been positive.

Regardless it is great to see a terrestrial tv show still hit over 10 million in this climate.

Also great to see that I am not the only one who still watched ITV after that Moopy poll. Still got the most watched reality show of the year even if it is only for the opening episode. :disco:

I've not been following the overnights, and I suspect that's what they have been looking at, because BARB hasn't released anything more. And then I'd also guess they may well be comparing those with the 7 day figure last year, to make the story fit their narrative. But we'll see.

A drop off of around a million for IACGMOOH which is on par with last year.

Yes, it's only 125k down on last year, about 1.4%, so very similar to the decrease for the launch episode, and again I suspect ITV will be very pleased with it.

Strictly is up very slightly on last year. Last year it was similarly close in IACGMOOH's first full week, but in its favour rather than Strictly's.

In conclusion, they are both holding up very well year on year.

I didn’t know where else to put it but I see French and Saunders are both guest judging on The Masked Singer Christmas special on BOXING DAY. Why are ITV not showing this on Christmas Day?

Presumably because they don't want to take on Call The Midwife or Gavin And Stacey. Crazy in these days of catch up that it bothers them, but I can't think of any other reason than seeing one of their Christmas highlights 'flop' on Christmas Day overnight viewing.

Do we know what it's up against on Boxing Day yet?

Although actually, The Masked Singer is more early evening, isn't it?

I guess that would put it against Wallace & Gromit, which I expect will be second only to Gavin & Stacey in terms of viewing figures over Christmas?

I can't think of anything more ghastly than spending Christmas evening with Call The Midwife

It's HEARTBEAT all over again

Because it will make more money for them in advertising revenue for them on Boxing Day.

Christmas Day is a lame duck for advertising revenue and has been for many many years. That's the reason why ITV barely make an effort on Christmas Day. If you're watching ITV1 in prime time on Christmas Day, notice how few adverts there actually are. It'll mainly be just trailers for shows coming up over the coming days.

Do they still do Strictly on Christmas Day? I’d guess that would be the same sort of time as Masked Singer and with quite a lot of audience overlap, for all that those things are irrelevant in a streaming age. Wasn’t Christmas Masked Singer on Boxing Day last year as well?

I think it possibly was. What Nancy says makes a lot of sense though.

That’s annoying as I’m not interested in either Gavin & Stacey nor Call The Midwife. I’d happily watch ITV instead at that time. Will probably stick on a film somewhere instead.

I always talk sense.

IACGMOOH this year has held up considerably better this year than it did last year - although it has fallen again this week compared to last, it's up just over 400k on the same week last year.

The final finished with 7 million in the overnights which is apparently half a million up on last year. It’s been a good series with a few tweaks on the format.

I know Bake Off is Bake Off but 6.7million for Channel 4 is absolutely huge, especially in this day and age

And it's almost exactly the same audience as the final last year - only 4k down. The reality shows at the end of this year have held up really well.

EastEnders was very much building to that big storyline last year this time last year though, wasn't it? And settled back to a lower audience again since.

I'm inclined to think the larger drops we had been seeing in previous years for the main channels may have levelled off.

Random question but why did they stop Pop Idol? Did season 2 flop?

Simon Cowell didn’t own the Pop Idol format so couldn’t make as much money. After Season 2, he left and said that he would be running X-Factor, which he did own, instead. ITV cancelled Pop Idol because they didn’t need two virtually identical shows.

Interesting. I wonder if the Pop Idol vehicle would have went on to be as big as X Factor in the UK. I remember it being massive but I don’t think it has QUITE the hold X Factor had in its prime.

Series 2 of Pop Idol definitely felt like a step down from 1. I'm sure a third series could have done well, but I think reinventing it as X Factor with Cowell, rather than ploughing on with Pop Idol 3 without him probably made sense.

A quick Google suggests that the first few series of X-Factor got lower ratings than even the second series of Pop Idol. It was only really after Leona that X-Factor started to grow into a real phenomenon.
