I'm talking about the Taylor Swift album - it's teen country pop and it's won EVERYTHING GOING

are you ready for this?

Country Album Of The Year - AMA
Country Album Of The Year - Billboard
Album Of The Year - Billboard
Radio Song Of The Year - Billboard
Album Of The Year - CMA
Video Of The Year - CMT
Female Video Of The Year - MTV
Female Album Of The Year - Teen Choice
Album Of The Year - Canadian CMA
Album Of The Year - Nashville
Album Of The Year - Grammys
Country Album Of The Year - Grammys
Country Song Of The Year - Grammys
Album Of The Year - ACMA

do we even HAVE any Taylor Swift fans on moopy?

"Fearless" is the perfect wholesome, all-American pop album.

For a start, it's by - ostensibly - a country artist, which means that she has successfully stradled two markets, a great way of selling gazillions of albums. It's all very family-friendly - the songs are about love and not sex, for example. There's a song about how much she loves her mum. She even rewrites "Romeo and Juliet" and give it a happy ending, a creative decision not dissimilar to Pheobe's mum turning off "Old Yeller" before the end.

But the best songs really work - "Love Story" is so charming (if a little faux-naif coming from anyone older than about 14) that by the time she collapses breathlessly at the end of the second chorus, you're actually rooting for her. "White Horse" is it's flipside, an eerily empty song of whispered, crushed disappointment and irrevocable conclusion by which only a corpse would fail to be moved. "You Belong To Me" meanwhile is top fun and catchier than *insert topical medical condition*.

So - young, pretty, country pop singer makes patchy album with several worthwhile highpoints and no swearing or wet patches. US duly goes nuts. I'm amazed no-one saw it coming.

i find the whole taylor swift thing disgusting
go kanye!

I don't have an opinion on her either way

(Kanye West and his ridiculous spectacles can fuck right off, though)

I also had no idea she reached #5 in the UK with the album and it spawned 6 singles.

She has COMPLETELY passed me by.

i rest my case

I usually like one country-pop female as much as the next, but Taylor Swift is just bland & nothingy, & not actualy that good. She knows her demographic though, & probably has a few years of success left in her yet.

this is my problem
i love a bit of red neck action as much as the next guy, but taylor swift feels like the most contrived artist since avril lavigne

Americans lap this kind of thing up - see also Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers (albeit with less crossover appeal to adults & non-country fans).

This is it - Swift is not aimed at kiddies but she's so wholesome that the adults think she's good for them and therefore push her towards them. Hence she has that market too.

Rolling Stone said the album sounds "scientifically engineered" because the songs are so perfectly crafted

I think they meant it as a compliment but it's pretty damning praise if you ask me

The songwriting is really clever, and I think she's really talented.

I can totally see where all the praise is coming.

You Belong With Me, Love Story, Fifteen, White Horse...these are all PERFECT pop songs.

SIX SINGLES? I knew about the first one...

And I agree - that Rolling Stones comment is HORRIBLE. It would make me gutted if I was a songwriter.

I just hate her voice. It's absolutely terrible. She's obviously a good songwriter though. Or at least has a good team of them.

Rather her than Miley Cyrus though.

Isn´t it the first album to have every track chart separately in the Hot 100 or something crazy like that?

You know what:
I always love a good country ballad or mid-tempo song in the style of Carrie Underwood or Shania Twain but all I've heard to so far from Taylor just left me cold apart from one piano version.

I just don't get all this hype, it's all so AMERICAN and beyond me.

I don't think she looks cute or anything neither.

Damn right. Bytch can't sing for shyt.

I actually watched a live stream of this shyt last night which I found very easily surprisingly here - http://www.atdhe.net/10028/watch-the-52nd-annual-grammy-awards

I'm sure a live stream of the Oscars won't be found so easily

Anyway, the duet she did with Stevie Knicks was aweful. Flat as a pancake and both were in different keys.

I noticed that her catchiest song "You Belong To Me" was actually a co-write

Kanye West kinda made her America's sweetheart and pushed her sales even further, so not a surprise. But the other nominees for album of the year were not exactly much to shout about either.

I can never understand the hate. She's one of those artists (in my eyes) who it is only possible to love or accept. How can you hate her? The songs are catchy (my god, Fifteen is like a virus in that respect) and the lyrics are charming. I'm not a fan as such and don't play her music much but I really don't mind being exposed to her/seeing her win all of these awards. She's a nice girl making nice music.

I didn't have you down as a fan

You're kinda taking me out of contect a bit; the next paragraph explains why I think that. Making the perfect, whoelsome, all-American pop album doesn't mean you've made a great album...

Totally underwhelmed, I'm afraid. 'Love Story' is nothing more than pleasant to me, and the couple of other things I've heard have been similarly bland and inoffensive.

Well yeah.. just didn't expect you to have listened to it!

But then you are very eclectic :smoke:

Same for me. I'm not recognising the descriptions of her music at all in the, admittedly limited, stuff that I have heard.

I love her.

She doesn't have the best album of the year, no way, but it's got perfectly pleasant songs on it (she wrote/co-wrote all of them, I believe) and some very good highlights. She's had TWENTY-TWO top 40 hits in the past three years here in the States and sold more than 11 million albums here.

"White Horse" is really eerily sad and sweet, and "You Belong With Me", "Change" and "Love Story" are good pop songs.

She should be right up my street but as with Carrie Underwood I have zero interest

I've only heard "Love Story" and I don't really want to hear anymore to be honest.

Who needs her when we have the fabulous Dixie Chicks doing what she does except 10x more intelligent and mature anyway?

If only they would release another album! It's been years.

Well I HEARD the other two are releasing an album together

Which means we'll get a Natalie solo album too - and I have a feeling it'll be FABULOUS

But I hope it doesn't mean the end of the band, rather just a little break :(

:o I didn't know that! I'm not sure if I need a fiddle record by Martie Maguire but a Natalie solo album will be all kinds of amazing. :disco:

Maguire's bluegrass album consists of fiddle tunes, a source close to the project says. Robison played banjo on "two or three" of the cuts with Scott Vestal handling banjo on the remainder.
"It's old tunes she learned when she was a kid," Maines notes, "and she's going to do an instructional book along with it."

There was some boring country CUNTS who performed on the Grammys last night.. really awful redneck stuff
