tv shows you've seen in 2020

I’m waiting to finish all the original US/UK HBO shows before diving into the European productions. There are some Spanish series that look really promising.

I know, it’s a bit frustrating when you want to catch up. The quality hasn’t really been up to HBO standards either.
 
For some reason I am currently watching the fourth episode of ITV's Russell Tovey-led drama The Sister.

His dreadful acting, Bertie Carvel's ridiculous voice, the ludicrous plot...
 
I've started the Undoing. Kidman serving some to die for practical magic glamour. Hugh Grant though (although I always say I'd try him out at least once, and by once I mean however long the calls last). I thought the son was the Stranger Things boy at first.
 
Well Kidman is off to the Country Music Awards and Grant is going to the Baftas going on how they look in the back of that car together.
 
Seriously, bedroom fridge Kidman is just imasculating Grant, he is doing absolutely nothing for me when suggesting or pretending sex. Did Divine ever give a review?
 
there's a thrilling plot in The Undoing but the direction is awful!

Yes I really recommend this, it really gets going after the first episodes.

I think I am finally going to start The Crown this weekend, and 'Sister' is on the list too..

'Sister' was pretty shit. And Russell Tovey is not leading man material.

I read an interview with him in which he said that being his first lead role he found that it was a lot more work than the ensemble stuff and wasn't sure he liked it. After watching The Sister I don't think he will be top of the list for many tv leading man roles anyway.

JUST FOUND OUT THE OPPOSITE IT TRUE!

EPISODE 2 WAS NUMBER ONE IN THE BBC1 CHART FOR THE WEEK IN THE 28 DAY RATINGS ... THIS TAKES INTO ACCOUNT ALL IPLAYER VIEWINGS FOR THE MONTH. THE 7 DAY RATINGS ARE GETTING MORE AND MORE IRRELEVANT THESE DAYS, ESPECIALLY WITH MORE BINGE WATCHING BEING DONE.

FINGERS CROSSED THIS MEANS THERE’LL BE A SECOND SERIES!
 
7 day ratings are useful for the shows which don't tend to pick up more viewers over the longer period (news, soaps, reality), but for dramas particularly they only tell a fraction of the story. I think a lot of people have very much settled into the Netflix model and binge them all over a night or two.

I think that's why we're seeing more and more dramas being broadcast over successive nights or at least a couple of times a week now. Waiting for one night a week feels really archaic somehow.

Fantastic! I am not sure why I thought the ratings were poor. I am sure I read a conversation about it in the tv ratings thread.
 
It's also worth noting as I believe I've said before in the tv ratings thread, that the 7 day weekly viewing charts only cover viewers watching from the day of TV BROADCAST + 7 days (or indeed 28 days for that chart).

So in the case of Life (as well as many others) where all episodes are made available on iplayer immediately, it's only the viewers who watched the second/third etc episode within 7 days of the date of TV broadcast who are counted. Anyone who binged all six episodes ( or indeed ANY episode) before it was actually broadcast on TV will not be counted.

And that's also I'm sure the reason why Roadkill plummeted from #4 to #11 last week and seemingly lost 2 million viewers. And presumably also why the last series of Killing Eve was at the bottom end of the chart, if at all. A lot of the views are hidden - or at least the popularity only apparent when the BBC releases streaming figures.

KILLING EVE GETS ABOUT 7-8 MILLION VIEWERS PER EPISODE IN TOTAL FOR THE BBC. THE WEEKLY VIEWING FIGURES CHART IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY LESS RELEVANT.
 
In short, the chart isn't satisfactory really, as it has only really slightly adapted to how we watch TV now.

It also means that the soaps are probably doing even more poorly than we have previously thought, as they aren't affected by this. And they tend not to make up much difference from the 7 day to 28 day chart either. Inevitable I guess for a show which is running several times a week permanently.

Exactly - I'm sure to Netflix it's hardly relevant at all. It’s based on a model of linear broadcasting. I think that's still the way most people watch TV, most of the time, but it's getting less and less popular.

I love SHEILA :D And Karen too. And for the first time in my life, I RECOGNIZE the places from a TV show. One of the diners in the show is my Saturday morning spot.

Sheila is one i prefer in the UK version actually. She's a bit more characterurish in the US one which I think is a bit dangerous when portraying mental illness!

Karen I do agree with you though. In the UK one (not sure of you've seen it so sorry of preaching to the choir) she's feisty, but a lot more boring compared to the US one. She also hangs around for all 9 seasons with not a lot else to do after her storylines her finished. The US one is a lot more 'punchy'
 
I've never seen the UK version, but Karen/Sheila in the US version are probably my two least favorite characters. I prefer when it focuses on the Gallaghers (especially Ian) and Kev/Veronica.

Monica is such a sad character for me, but I do like her a lot.
 
If you like to hate her, just wait for season 3 :D

Which is also where Mickey (:horny:/:() gets involved
